Honkers Drop Heart-Breaker to Bombers to Begin Road Trip

(Rochester,MN) - The Rochester Honkers began an eight-game road trip with a heart-breaking 6-5 loss to the Battle Creek Bombers on Sunday, July 28, at C.O. Brown Stadium in Battle Creek, MI.

Kalei Hanawahine (Hawaii) singled and stole second base in the top of the third inning to set up a RBI single from Max Murphy (Bradley) to give the Honkers an early 1-0 lead.

Honkers starting pitcher Quinn Carpenter (Iowa Western) was perfect through the first 3.2 innings as he retired the first 11 batters of the game before allowing his first hit to Rouric Bridgewater in the bottom of the fourth inning. He then issued four consecutive walks Kade Scivicque, Matt Fears, Joe Serrano, and Tyler Moore to give the Bombers a 2-1 lead after the fourth inning.

Caleb Dugas (Copiah-Lincoln Community College) reached on a walk to get things started for Rochester in the top of the sixth inning. Murphy followed with a single and both runners advanced on a wild pitch to set up a two-run single from Tyler Baker (Wichita State) to regain the lead at 3-2.

Battle Creek answered with its own two-run inning in the bottom of the sixth inning as Cam Gibson drew a bases loaded walk and Jacob Foster was hit hit by a pitch in the following plate appearance to make the score 4-3 after six innings. Both runs charged to Brian Schwarzbach (Pennsylvania) were unearned due to an error committed earlier in the inning.

Parker Sullivan (Minnesota State-Mankato) walked with one out in the top of the seventh inning and Dugas reached on an error with two outs to keep the inning alive for Murphy, who delivered with a two-run triple to put the Honkers back in front at 5-4.

Foster singled with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning and advanced to third base on consecutive wild pitches to pose a threat for the Bombers. Bridgewater was intenionally walked and Scivicque followed with a game-tying single. Sullivan was able to end the inning by doubling off Bridgewater at second base.

Drew Carlile started the bottom of the 12th inning with a single and came around to score the game-winning run when Serrano avoided an inning-ending double play and reached on a fielder's choice.

Todd Eaton earned the win (3-5) for Battle Creek. He allowed just one hit in four scoreless innings in relief. Brandon Stennis (Doane College) took the loss (2-5) for Rochester. Carpenter allowed two runs on one hit in 3.2 innings. Mason Pingel (Western Illinois) retired all four batters he faced in relief for the Honkers.

Murphy led the Honkers offense by going 3-for-6 with a triple and three RBI. Mike Friel (Hofstra) and Hanawahine each collected a pair of hits on the day.

The two teams will resume the two-game series on Tuesday, July 30, at 10 a.m. (CT) in Battle Creek. Logan Spitzack (St. Cloud State) is scheduled to start for Rochester (4-18, 22-35) in the series finale. The Honkers will be represented by six players: Jeff Campbell (North Dakota,) Reid Roper (Illinois,) Tyler Eppler (Sam Houston State,) Hayden Edwards (Kansas,) Baker, and Murphy in Game 1 of the Big League Dreams Showcase in Madison, WI, on Monday July 29 at 4:05 p.m. After the series in Battle Creek, the Honkers road trip will make stops in Lakeshore, St. Cloud, and Thunder Bay before returning home to host the Bombers on Tuesday, August 6, at 7:05 p.m. to kick-off a six game home stand that will conclude the regular season.
