Blue Anchors fall to La Crosse 7-3

La Crosse, Wis. - The Alexandria Blue Anchors fell to the La Crosse Loggers 7-3 Sunday night at Copeland Park. The loss puts the Anchors' record at 9-13 in the second half and 19-37 overall.

The Loggers jumped against starter Kevin Hatcher in the first. With one out, Brandon DeFazio tripled to right field and came in to score on a groundout by Kevin Zak for a 1-0 lead.

In the second, Nick Day hit a solo homer to start the inning to right field increasing the Loggers' advantage to 2-0. Troy Traxler singled and went to third on another single by Steven Moen. On a double play off the bat of Eric Toole, Traxler scored La Crosse's third run.

Alexandria used a big fourth inning to tie the game against Derek Gordon. Michael Barash got things started when he reached on an error by the second baseman. He went to third on a Tim Cusick single. After Aaron Gretz popped out to short for the second out of the frame, Andrew Mulato singled Barash home. Tyler Curtis also singled to load the bases. A double by Keegan Dale plated Cusick and Mulato to knot the score at three.

Taylor Simpson, who entered in the fourth, allowed a double to Katz with one out in the fifth. After a fly out, Zack Rivera doubled scoring Katz and giving the Loggers lead again 4-3.

Against Zac Custer in the seventh, La Crosse added some insurance runs. DeFazio led off with a double and went to third as Katz reached on an Albert Baur error. A walk to Johnny Bekakis loaded the bases and Custer was about out of the jam as Rivera popped out to short and he had two strikes on Nick Day. However, Day hit a double to left clearing the bases giving the Loggers a 7-3 lead.

Hatcher went three innings in his start allowing three runs, two earned, on six hits and a walk with three strikeouts. Simpson (2-3) pitched well in relief but took the loss going three innings giving up one run on two hits, a walk with three punch outs. Custer lasted one inning allowing three unearned runs on two hits and a walk with one strikeout. Scott Sanderson finished the game pitching a perfect eighth with one strikeout.

Minnesota Baseball Academy Player of the Game - Keegan Dale (2B) - The Cal State Fullerton infielder continues to stay hot at the plate and had one hit in three at bats. He also drove in two runs and drew two walks.

Notes: Dale's hitting streak has reached 15 games...Baur is on an 11 game hitting streak...Andrew Sohn was out of the lineup for the first time in 2013...The RBI for Mulato is his first since June 18th...Tomorrow, Sohn, Georgie Salem, Kris Goodman and Hunter Newman will be participating in the Northwoods League Big League Dreams Showcase in Eau Claire...The Anchors are off tomorrow but return to action Tuesday night against the Loggers...On the mound is Corey Fitzgerald (0-6, 6.28)...Tuesday's game, starting at 7:05 p.m., can be seen live at www.youtube.com/user/NorthwoodsLeague.
