Ocean State Waves News Release

GROTON, Conn. - Shaun McGraw finished a triple shy of the cycle and three Ocean State pitchers combined to shutout Mystic 5-0 on Friday afternoon at Fitch High School Field.

The Waves (20-14) go into the All-Star break in second place in the East Division standings and now own a 3-2 lead in the season-series with the Schooners (17-15).

Ocean State jumped on the board quickly in the first thanks to a pair of home runs. For the second time this week against Mystic, Evan Ocello led off the game with a home run as he slammed a 1-0 pitch over the left-center field wall. Two batters later, Mike Gerber launched the first pitch he saw well over the right field wall to make it 2-0.

Ocean State added to its lead in the fifth thanks to another long ball. Caden Bailey singled and Gerber was hit by a pitch to start the inning before McGraw hit an opposite field home run to right-center to make it 5-0.

James Bessell and Dan Ludwig did the rest for the Waves. Bessell started and tossed four scoreless innings, allowing just three hits. He struck out four and didn't walk a batter. Bessell worked around back-to-back singles to start the game, ending the frame with a strikeout. He then stranded a runner at second in third and struck out the final two batters he faced to end the fourth and strand another runner in scoring position. Ludwig then followed suit, tossing four scoreless innings of his own. He allowed just two hits, struck out five and issued just one walk. Ludwig worked out of his only trouble in the sixth as he struck out Anthony Turgeon looking to end the inning and strand runners on the corners. Austin French made his appearance since June 28, tossing a perfect ninth.

McGraw finished the afternoon with three hits and three RBI, and Bailey chipped in a pair of hits. Gerber scored a pair of runs for the Waves.

The Waves will have the next three days off. The NECBL All-Star Game will be played on Sunday in Laconia, with Christian Muscarello and Gerber set to start for the East Division. McGraw will be the backup DH and also compete in the Home Run Derby.
