Newport Gulls News Release

NEWPORT, RI - The Newport Gulls picked up their 21st win of the season on Friday night in the second ever match-up against the Saratoga Brigade in their inaugural contest at Cardines Field.

A 3-0 victory for Newport southpaw Mark McCoy would be the second in three games of the flock's home stand. With an ERA tainted by a grand slam in his last appearance on the road at Ocean State, McCoy quickly fixed that going 6 scoreless innings, striking out 9, walking only 1 with 5 hits allowed.

A quiet contest early, the Newport Gulls would strike first in the fourth inning with back-to-back hits with no outs. Ben Roberts continued his hot streak with a lead-off single for the Gulls off of Brigade starting right-hander, Chris Williams. Joel McKeithan, coming off 3 days of rest, kept the ball rolling with a long single himself advancing Roberts to third.

With runners at the corners, things would shake up a bit on the base path as Newport attempted the double steal. Roberts would get caught up between third and home, while McKeithan would take over at third while the ensuing batter, Steve Anderson would take over first with a 1-out walk.

Adrian English, who has been leading the Gulls in average of late and started in the designated hitter spot, would lift Newport to a 1-0 lead with an RBI single to bring home McKeithan from third.

Shea Donlin, coming off of a 1-4 game with an RBI in the 8-0 Newport win over Sanford on Wednesday, would add to his season total with a single grounded through first and second to bring Ethan Ferreira home to bring the Gulls lead to 2-0.

English, fitting in well in the 6 slot as DH in the order, would pick up his second RBI of the night in the sixth bringing McKeithan around to score yet again to cushion Newport's lead, now 3 runs for the flock.

That would be all the Gulls would need, as Joe Iorio, Kyle McGrath, and Kyle Wilcox would combine relief efforts to shut the door on the Brigade for the win at home in front of a crowd 2,712. Wilcox, headed to the All-Star Game on Sunday in Laconia, picked up his sixth save of the season, striking out 2 and allowing no one to reach base in the 9th.

With the win, the Newport Gulls improve to 21-10 - the best record in the league - sweeping the series with Saratoga, who drop to 15-16. The Newport Gulls will go on the road tomorrow to face the Plymouth Pilgrims at Forges Field as RHP Darrin Gilles will have the start for Newport.
