New Bedford Bay Sox News Release
The Bay Sox battled through an hour and a half rain delay and strong Vermont starting pitching, to beat the Mountaineers 4-2 Friday night at Montpelier Recreational Field.
The Mountaineers starting pitcher Johsn Nasshan (Bradley) had quieted the Bay Sox bats, allowing two hits on 51 pitches, until the top of the seventh.
Lane Richards (Notre Dame) led the inning off with a single to right field, extending his hitting streak to five games. Back-to-back walks loaded the bases, and New Bedford had a runner on third base for the first time all game. With no outs, Chris Travers (Roger Williams) tied the game with a 2-run double that went off the diving glove of Vermont's left fielder Scott Donley (Indiana). On the very next pitch, Max Nogay (West Virginia) gave New Bedford a 3-2 lead with a single to right field.
The game went into an hour and a half rain and lightning delay following Nogay's single.
Robert Strader (Louisville) replaced Nasshan after the delay. With 1 out and runners on first and third, Andrew Dundon (Marshall) came up with a pinch-hit single to center field to make it 4-2 Bay Sox.
Bay Sox starter Remy Janco (Duke) got the win, despite leaving the game down 2-0. Janco allowed 2 runs, on 9 hits, in 6 innings pitched.
Janco ran into trouble in the bottom of the third when he gave up back-to-back singles to Bret Dennis (St. Johns) and Chandler Brock (Alabama Huntsville). With runners on first and third, Thomas Roulis (Dartmouth) hit a hard groundball to third base that was stopped by a diving Max Nogay (West Virgina). Nogay got the out at first, allowing Dennis to score from third and make it 1-0 Mountaineers.
The Mountaineers added another run in the fourth with a 2-out single from Matt McDowell (Dartmouth).
Brendan O'Rourke (Franklin Pierce) pitched a near flawless seventh and eighth, striking out five, and Jeremy Perron (Holy Cross) got the save in the ninth.
The Bay Sox are now 13-20 on the season. They face the Mystic Schooners tomorrow at Paul Walsh Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 PM.
