Corpus Christi Hooks News Release

CORPUS CHRISTI, TX - A hot start and a late rally was not enough for the Hooks as the Rockhounds claimed Friday's contest 5-3. Third baseman Taylor Motter hit a pair of home runs - including the go-ahead two-run blast in the fourth for Midland.

The Hooks again scored in the first inning thanks to back-to-back doubles from Bryan De La Cruz and Ronnie Dawson. It was yet another strong first frame against Midland starter Matt Milburn, who entered the game with an ERA north of 13.00.

That run would be the only of the game for the Hooks until the ninth as Milburn earned his sixth win of the season. The ninth began with three straight singles, but the offense wouldn't bear fruit until Bryan De La Cruz knocked a two-run single with two outs to bring Ronnie Dawson to the plate as the winning run. He would strike out to end the contest.

Corpus Christi activated right-hander Brandon Bailey to make his first start since July 7th on Friday night. He worked into the fourth inning allowing a pair of homers while striking out two.

Tyler Ramirez connected on an opposite field blast in the second off of Bailey to tie the game at 1-1. Motter's first homer would give the Rockhounds a 3-1 lead in the fourth. His second padded the lead in the sixth, a solo liner to left to make it 4-1.

In the eighth, Chase Calabuig added an RBI single to add-on a marker and set the score at 5-1, proving to be a valuable insurance run ahead of the Corpus Christi rally.

Offensively, Stephen Wrenn lead the way with three hits as JJ Matijevic and De La Cruz also added mutli-hit nights.

Game three of the series is "Dia De Los Regalos" at 7:15 P.M. on Saturday. All fans will receive a random gift of one of the following: a replica 2017 World Series ring, a Whataburger jersey, a George Springer "Thumbs Up" bobblehead, or a retro Astros cap. Gates are set to open at 5:45 P.M.
