MODESTO, Calif. - The Stockton Ports fell victim to the long ball on Tuesday night at John Thurman Field. The Modesto Nuts hit a pair of home runs that accounted for all of their scoring as Stockton fell by a final of 5-1 to open a three-game series.

Ports starter Xavier Altamirano (3-4) gave up his first homer in the first inning to Evan White, a two-run blast to left with one out that gave the Nuts the initial lead. After the Ports got a run back in the top of the third on a two-out single by Chase Calabuig, the Nuts added three more runs to their lead in the bottom of the third. With two on and two out, Joe Rizzo homered down the right field line to give the Nuts a 5-1 advantage.

Altamirano would not allow another run after the Rizzo home run but would go on to suffer the loss in the contest, going six innings and allowing five runs on nine hits while striking out three.

Modesto starter Darren McCaughan (6-8) would pitch into the seventh inning and leave with two on and two out. Jack Anderson came on in relief and stranded the two inherited runners as McCaughan would go on to pick up the win, going 6 2/3 innings and allowing seven hits while walking three and striking out four. McCaughan worked just one clean inning, pitching around multiple baserunners in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings.

Anderson would go on to pitch around a leadoff double in the eighth inning as he logged 1 1/3 scoreless frames in relief of McCaughan.

Trey Cochran-Gill took over for Altamirano in the seventh inning and would pitch two scoreless frames to get Stockton through the eighth.

Danny Garcia came on to close out the game for Modesto in the ninth. After recording back-to-back strikeouts to open the frame, Garcia surrendered three straight singles to get the possible-tying run to the plate in Greg Deichmann. Deichmann, however, would ground out to Garcia to end the ballgame.

Calabuig, who drove in Stockton's lone run of the night, went 3-for-4 and reached base four times. Cobie Vance and Santiago Chavez each went 2-for-4. With his effort at the plate on Tuesday night, Chavez is now 10-for-his-last-16.

The Ports and Nuts play the middle game of their three-game series on Wednesday night at John Thurman Field. Left-hander Evan Manarino (3-5, 5.76 ERA) makes the start for Stockton, opposed by Modesto right-hander Austin Hutchison (1-3, 4.62 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. PDT.
