Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
VERO BEACH, FL (July 26, 2006) - The Fort Myers Miracle got a quick lesson on how well the ball carries at Holman Stadium, giving up four home runs to the Vero Beach Dodgers, who have the third most homers in the Florida State League, in losing 8-2 on Wednesday night.
The Miracle, who fell to 17-13 in the second half, were playing a Dodger team that is 24 games under .500 on the season, but they didn't play like it on Wednesday. The home run barrage began in first inning when Cory Dunlap crushed a solo shot over the right-center field wall, his 12th of the season to make it 1-0.
Xavier Paul hit his 12th of the season, a solo shot over the right-center field wall in the third to give the Dodgers a 2-0 lead.
Miracle starter Josh Hill gave up his third long ball of the night in the fifth. He walked Jamie Hoffman, who advanced all the way to third on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Paul. Hill then gave up the long ball to Blake DeWitt, his 17th of the season to make it 5-0. Hill went 4.1 innings allowing five runs on five hits while walking three and striking out four.
The Dodgers finished their home run hitting in the sixth when Juan Apodaca hit his first, a solo shot to left off of reliever Jose Mijares.
The Miracle got a homer of their own, a two run bomb to right by Brandon Roberts in the seventh, but by that time it was too late. Dodger starter Alberto Bastardo was impressive working 6.1 innings allowing two runs on six hits while walking three and striking out six.
The same two teams meet Thursday night at Holman Stadium beginning at 7:00 p.m. The Miracle are scheduled to send LHP Dave Gassner (0-0, 0.00), making his second Major League rehab start, to the mound. If he can't go RHP Kyle Waldrop (2-0, 2.25) will take the hill. The Dodgers counter with RHP Jonathon Meloan (1-0, 3.86). The game can be heard live on Sports Radio 770 ESPN with the pre-game show beginning at 6:45.
