Hollis Triples Twice, Missions Drop Series Opener to Amarillo

SAN ANTONIO - Following the series victory in Corpus Christi, the San Antonio Missions returned to Nelson Wolff Stadium for a new homestand against the Amarillo Sod Poodles. Amarillo came out of the gates strong and scored six runs across the first two innings. Meanwhile, the Missions offense plated two runs through the first eight innings. Despite two triples from Connor Hollis and 11 hits as a team, the Missions fell victim to the Sod Poodles by a final score of 6-3.

Thomas Eshelman was the starting pitcher for the Missions. Coming off a complete game loss in Corpus Christi, Tuesday night started out rough for the veteran right-hander. Amarillo plated four runs in the top of the first inning on five hits. Corbin Carroll started off the game with a triple and Jorge Barrosa reached base on an infield single. Carroll came around to score on a single from Eduardo Diaz. Barrosa ended up at third base after a sacrifice bunt. Barrosa scored while Blaze Alexander reached base on a dropped third strike. Ti'Quan Forbes drove in a run with a single. Lastly, Andy Yerzy drove in a run with a single to center field. Amarillo took a 4-0 lead.

Slade Cecconi was the starting pitcher for the Amarillo Sod Poodles. He allowed a run on a pair of hits in the bottom of the first inning. With one out in the inning, Kelvin Alarcon hit a double to right field. He advanced to third base on a wild pitch. Alarcon came around to score on a groundout from Domingo Leyba. Missions trailed 5-1.

Amarillo improved their lead by scoring two more runs in the top of the second inning. Barrosa reached base on a fielding error from Leyba. The error allowed Barrosa to advance to second base. A wild pitch from Eshelman allowed Barrosa to advance to third base. He came around to score on a single from Jancarlos Cintron. After a single from Alexander, Cintron came around to score on a fielding error from Alarcon. Amarillo improved their lead to 6-1.

San Antonio continued to fight back and added their second run of the game in the bottom of the second inning. Thomas Milone started off the inning with a base hit. He advanced to second base on a wild pitch. Ripken Reyes drove in Milone with a single to center field. San Antonio trailed 6-2.

Eshelman lasted five innings while allowing 11 hits and six runs. Henry Henry came on to pitch in the top of the sixth inning. The tall right-hander tossed three shutout innings while allowing two hits and striking out one batter. Kevin Kopps pitched a scoreless ninth inning for San Antonio while walking one batter.

San Antonio attempted a comeback in the bottom of the ninth inning. Facing Blake Rogers, Reyes drew a one-out walk. He came around to score on a triple from Hollis. For Hollis, it was his second triple of the game and he became the first Missions player since Robbie Podorsky on May 7th, 2021 to record two triples in a game.

The San Antonio Missions will continue their six-game series with the Amarillo Sod Poodles on Wednesday, June 15th. Left-hander Jason Blanchard (0-0, 5.73) is scheduled to pitch for the Missions. Right-hander Bryce Jarvis (2-2, 7.96) is scheduled to pitch for the Amarillo Sod Poodles. First pitch is expected for 7:05 p.m.
