Rockford IceHogs News Release
Rockford, Ill.- In their first ever School Day game, the Rockford IceHogs dropped a 4-3 shootout decision to the Quad City Mallards in front of 4,009 fans at the Rockford MetroCentre Thursday afternoon. The Hogs couldn't shake the pesky Mallards who outscored Rockford 2-to-1 in the shootout.
The Hogs jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period. Defenseman Vince Malt completed a 2-on-1 breakaway with winger Chris Gobert at 4:50 of the opening frame to put Rockford on the board. Later, on the power play, winger Terry Harrison beat Mallards goalie Robert Gherson at 8:57 to push the lead to a pair.
Quad City responded with two goals of their own, to tie the game at the first break. Winger Patrick Nadeau blasted home the Mallards first marker at 13:01 to cut the lead in half. Defenseman Terry Hollinger then tied the score at two a piece, firing home a rebound at 16:35.
Rockford picked up the only goal in the second frame when blue-liner Nathan Lutz back-handed the go ahead goal past Gherson at 18:42. But Quad City responded once again when A.J. MacLean knocked in the equalizer at 5:12, eventually sending the game to a shootout
In the extra session, the Hogs couldn't off set goals from Jason Deskins and Joe Dusbabek and had to settle for the shootout point. Malts had Rockford's only shootout goal. Robinson made 25 saves for the IceHogs while Gherson earned the win, stopping 14 Rockford shots. The game marked the first time in 12 contests in which the Hogs were out-shot.
