Hockey prospect prefers lacrosse

Calgary, AB - The Calgary Royals of the Alberta Junior Hockey League could well lose one of their key defenders in the New Year ... to another sport.

Jordon Sealock has told the Royals that if he makes the Calgary Roughnecks lacrosse team, he'll be swapping skates for runners.

"I've only been playing lacrosse for six years," said Sealock today, "but from the moment I picked up a stick I knew I wanted to be a professional in the NLL (National Lacrosse League).

Sealock, 20, who was taken in the 5th round (60th overall) in the recent NLL entry draft, is a part-time student at Mount Royal College.

During the summer, he plays lacrosse for the Junior A Calgary Raiders.

Ironically, his coach at the Raiders is Shawn Cable, who rejoined the Roughnecks in the off-season after stints in Portland, Anaheim and Colorado.

"Shawn and I have a strong relationship," said Sealock. "He is an excellent coach, a good guy and a great friend. I think it would be real neat to play on the same team with him."

He could also find himself on the same floor as Kaleb Toth, the Roughnecks star who inadvertently led Sealock to lacrosse.

The Airdrie product knew nothing of the sport until he watched the Champion's Cup on television in 2000, when Toth scored in the final second of regular time to give his then team, the Toronto Rock, the much-coveted trophy.

"That game was so fast and exciting, I knew right away it was the sport for me," said Sealock.

He added, "I'm so grateful to the Roughnecks for giving me this opportunity, and I'm going to work so hard they'll find it real difficult to deny me a place."

Riggers' General Manager Kurt Silcott says Sealock will be given every chance to make the Roughnecks.

"We have a very experienced, talented group of players in camp this year," said Silcott, "but Jordon comes to us highly recommended and I expect him to challenge for a spot on the roster."

Sealock is 6ft. 1in., 190 lbs, and plays transition. He is the first player from Airdrie to be drafted to the NLL.
