Coastal Plain High Point-Thomasville HiToms

HiToms Kick Off Busy Week With Monday Night Visit From Wilson Tobs

June 1, 2015 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
High Point-Thomasville HiToms News Release

After the Gastonia Grizzlies again walked-off in victory over the High Point-Thomasville HiToms last Saturday night (the second time in five days such a defeat was dealt), the suddenly sullen HiToms will again look towards Finch Field in Thomasville for relief as they host the Wilson Tobs on Monday night to kick off a busy week of Coastal Plain League baseball.

Before the HiToms were rained out on Sunday afternoon at Finch Field in their exhibition battle with Carolina-Virginia Collegiate Baseball League (CVCL) opponent Kernersville (a contest in which the Bulldogs led High Point-Thomasville 4-1 through five innings), the Brian Rountree-led squad was first locked in another tight grudge match with the Gastonia Grizzlies at Sims Legion Park on Saturday night.

After falling victim to Gastonia's theatrics on May 26th (5-4 Grizzlies walk-off victory), the HiToms were determined to even the score on Saturday in their second meeting of opening week with a now all-too-familiar foe.

Unfortunately for the HiToms, fate would again be in favor of the home team as the Grizzlies posted three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to overcome a 3-1 deficit to High Point-Thomasville and earn their second walk-off win of the week over the HiToms.

An insurance run posted by the HiToms (Hunter Slater RBI that scored Drew Ellis) in the top of the ninth at the time seemed to be the necessary cushion needed in order for the visitors to win their third straight and even things up on the young season with Gastonia.

But on Saturday evening, the Grizzlies were again too strong when it mattered most as the home team took advantage of a Brennan Morgan RBI that scored Dalton Skelton in the bottom of the ninth to garner their fourth and final run of the night en route to another miraculous win.

Despite having victory snatched from their fingertips twice last week, the HiToms (2-3) must quickly develop a case of amnesia as they return to Finch Field on Monday night to host the visiting Wilson Tobs (2-4).

Losers of three straight entering tonight's contest (most recent: 5-12 defeat at the hands of the Peninsula Pilots last Saturday night at Fleming Stadium in Wilson, NC), the Tobs will look to snap their slump at the expense of a HiToms team that dominated the opposition last time out at Finch Field (9-0 win against Holly Springs on May 29th).

David Shaeffer (.364 average) leads the HiToms in overall offense while Peter Johnson and Gavin Culler (six combined RBI) sit atop the team leaderboard in total run production.

The Wilson Tobs visit Thomasville being led by Chad Frazier (.429 clip) at the plate while the combination of both Andrew Webster and Collin Thacker account for 10 of the 32 total team hits through six games of 2015 action.

Tonight's meeting between the HiToms and Tobs also marks the fourth-consecutive playing of the AMTRAK Train Game. Since 2012, one of the two teams has utilized AMTRAK transportation as their means of travel to reach the other team's home field. This time around, it's the Wilson Tobs' turn to hit the rails on their way to Thomasville as they embark on an unique journey once again made possible by both AMTRAK and the North Carolina Department of Transportation Rail Division.

Follow along with tonight's action on CPL WebPass as the "Voices of the HiToms" (Corey Hodges & Parker Southern) take you from the opening pitch to the final out.

Coverage gets underway at 6:55 PM ET with the HiToms Baseball Pre-Game show followed by the first pitch shortly after 7 PM.
