Wilmington Sharks News Release
The Wilmington Sharks (3-2) picked up their third straight win in a 3-2 victory over the Morehead City Marlins (2-3), behind another stellar performance from a Sharks starter - this time from the left-handed Alex Hamilton. Hamilton (1-0) got the win after going 6.1 innings, allowing two runs on seven hits, while striking out ten Marlins and walking just one.
Wilmington jumped out to an early lead in the first following a Nick Rotola (Oral Roberts) leadoff walk, who would promptly be moved up to second following a Hayden Jones (Oklahoma) balk. A faulty attempt to pick-off the speedy Rotola would sail into center field, allowing the shortstop to score easily from second.
Morehead City responded with a run in the third and fourth each - the result of four hits, two stolen bases, and a Sharks error. Wilmington would go on to commit four errors on the night, while Morehead City would finish the evening with three stolen bases. The Marlins came into Monday night's game leading the league in steals, while Wilmington led the league in steals allowed.
Ben Conner (Mount Olive) drew a walk to leadoff the fifth, the catalyst to a Sharks rally to take the lead for good. Andrew Locklear (N. Greenville University) hit one on the ground to second, allowing Conner to scamper up to second base. Nick Rotola singled to center, moving Conner up to third. The catcher would be scored by the bat of Brett Smith (Bucknell), bringing Rotola around to third. Alex Destino (S. Carolina) extended his hitting streak to three games by singling to right, bringing in Rotola, and running Marlins starting pitcher Hayden Jones out of the ballgame.
With Brett Smith on second and Alex Destino on first, the carousel would continue when Morehead City reliever Ben Harrison's pitch could not be contained by Alex Kowalcyzk, so each Shark moved up a base. Joe Bialkowski (Georgetown) would then single to center to bring in Smith.
Morehead City capitalized on a Sharks error in the seventh to get within one run of Wilmington, but would get no closer than that.
The Wilmington Sharks will be hosted by the Fayetteville SwampDogs on Tuesday evening before returning home Wednesday to host the Peninsula Pilots, who sit atop the CPL East. Wednesday is Wild Wing Wednesday at the Shark Tank, where fans can get chicken wings from Buffalo Wild Wings for 50 cents each.
