Lynchburg Hillcats News Release

Salem, VA - The Hillcats fell short again in Salem Thursday night, dropping their fourth straight game and third straight against the Red Sox by a score of 3-1.

The Salem Red Sox struck first against the Hillcats Thursday night. Center fielder Peter Hissey drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the first. A ground ball to the right side moved Hissey to second before a strikeout brought first baseman Reynaldo Rodriguez to the plate with two outs. Rodriguez laced a ground ball through the left side of the infield scoring Hissey from second. Salem went up 1-0 after the first.

Lynchburg evened things up in the fourth. Joe Leonard reached on an error with two outs extending the inning for Riaan Spanjer-Furstenburg. Spanjer-Furstenburg took advantage of the Salem miscue doubling down the right field line. Leonard hustled all the way around from first base to score on the play, however, the inning would end as Furstenburg was caught trying to stretch his RBI double into a triple.

The 1-1 tie lasted into the fifth inning when the Red Sox bats ignited. Derrik Gibson kick started a string of three straight doubles for Salem, plating a pair of runs, and putting Salem up 3-1. The third double brought Hillcats starter, Dimasther Delgado's night to a close. Left-hander Matt Crim entered the game and retired the side with no further damage.

Salem's bullpen took over for starter Chris Hernandez in the sixth and continued their dominance. Right-hander Kendall Volz and lefty Mitch Herold combined for four scoreless innings of relief, continuing the Red Sox current streak of 19 consecutive scoreless innings.

Hernandez (1-0) earned the win for Salem and Herold captured his first save of the season pitching the eighth and ninth frames for the Sox. Delgado accepted the loss after surrendering all three Salem runs in 4.1 innings pitched.

The Hillcats will open up the gates of Lynchburg City Stadium for the first time in 2011 Friday night as they welcome the Myrtle Beach Pelicans to town. The ‘Cats home opener will start at 6:05 PM. Be sure to get to the ballpark early as the first 1,000 fans in attendance receive a free pennant, and stay late for the first fireworks show of the season.
