Salem Red Sox News Release

Salem, VA (April 14, 2011) - An impressive formula of sensational pitching and timely hitting has surged the Salem Sox to the top of their division. Thursday's 3-1 victory over Lynchburg became the third straight ballgame in which Salem did not allow an earned run, as the steady strike-throwing of Red Sox hurlers stymied the Hillcats in a convincing three-game sweep. Though the Sox' offense never exploded in the series, Salem dominated the mid-week matchups by holding Lynchburg to a .147 average (14-95) in the three games and outscoring the Hillcats 12-3.

Chris Hernandez shined in his Carolina League debut, recording 12 outs via ground balls over five strong innings. The lefty out of the University of Miami earned his first professional win, surrendering just one unearned run and one hit while on the mound. In relief, the Salem bullpen perpetuated its season-long stardom, bringing its collective scoreless streak to 19 innings. Kendal Volz and Mitch Herold each tossed a pair of goose eggs on the board, with Herold picking up the save for the Sox.

Offensively, Salem snagged an early lead when Peter Hissey scored on Reynaldo Rodriguez' two-out RBI single in the bottom of the first. Lynchburg starter Dimaster Delgado held the Sox hitters without a run or a hit over the next three innings, but Salem pounded the fatigued lefthander in the fifth. Derrick Gibson, Vladimir Frias, and Hissey delivered three straight one-out doubles to plate two more and break the one-all tie in the bottom of the fifth, knocking Delgado out of the game.

Hissey authored his second multi-hit game of the season, going 2-3 with an RBI and a walk. Even Hissey's out was a loud one, as his deep fly to right-center field in the third inning was run down on the warning track by Hillcats right-fielder L.V. Ware.

After winning four out of five in their season opening homestand, the Red Sox hit the road for the first time in 2011 on Friday, traveling to Frederick for a weekend series with the Keys. The opener at Harry Grove Stadium features a rematch of the Opening Day duel in Salem, with lefthander Drake Britton opposing righthander Ryan O'Shea on the bump. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
