THE HILLCATS: Last night, the Hillcats lost to the Myrtle Beach Pelicans 7-3...The Pelicans led off the game with five straight hits in the top of the first before recording an out...Myrtle Beach took a 4-0 lead...SS Nick Ahmed hit a solo shot in the bottom of the first to put the Hillcats on the board, but the 'Cats could never come back from the early deficit...RHP Gus Schlosser (3-1) surrendered a season-high seven runs in just four and two-thirds innings and took the loss...The Hillcats racked up nine hits and stranded 11 base runners...Lynchburg is now 14-12 and remain in first place in the Carolina League Northern Division...
VS. MYRTLE BEACH: The Hillcats and Pelicans meet for the first time in 2012 this weekend in Lynchburg...Myrtle Beach took the series opener last night and lead the season series 1-0...The Hillcats were swept at home by the Pelicans in their first series at City Stadium a year ago...That sweep came in the midst of a ten-game losing streak for the Hillcats...The Hillcats were 4-6 against Myrtle Beach at home last season and went 9-11 overall against the Pelicans...
UNION RAGS: Lynchburg continued it's struggles against teams from the South this season with a loss to Myrtle Beach last night...The Carolina Mudcats of the Southern Division just took three of four from the Hillcats for the second time in 11 days earlier this week...The Hillcats are 2-6 against Carolina, 3-3 against Salem, and now 0-1 against Myrtle Beach...Yet to face Winston-Salem, who is in first place in the Southern Division...The Hillcats are now 5-10 against the Southern Division, but they've dominated divisional foes in the North, posting a 9-2 record in those games...
PROSPECTIVE: The Hillcats lost their third straight game last night...This is their first three-game losing streak of the season, which figured to happen at some point...Winston-Salem is the only team left in the league without a three-game slide, they fought it off again last night with a 10-8 victory over Salem...This losing streak comes in the Hillcats first week without C Evan Gattis, who was promoted to Double-A Mississippi at the beginning of this homestand...Gattis was hitting .385 with nine home runs, 29 RBI, and 16 extra-base hits, all of which are still league-highs...Without Gattis the Hillcats are now 1-4 which matches their worst five-game stretch of the season...Gattis hit a home run for Mississippi last night and is now hitting .438 (7-for-16) with two home runs, two doubles, six RBI, three runs scored, slugging .938, with an on-base percentage of .471 through four games...
DONE TALKING: OF Kyle Rose has said he feels fine the last couple of days, and this evening he'll get a chance to prove it on the field...Rose has been activated from the disabled list...He was placed on the DL April 25 after colliding with Carolina Mudcats' 1B Jesus Aguilar running out a ball to first...Aguilar left the game, and Rose finished but hit the DL a day later...He has taken batting practice with the team the last two days...OF L.V. Ware was released from the Braves organization today as well, which made room for Rose to be activated...Ware signed as Minor League Free Agent back in 2007 and made it as high as Double-A in 2010 and 2012...
DADDY LONG LEGS: 2B Tommy La Stella stole his seventh base of the season last night which which is tied for seventh in the Carolina League...He still is yet to be caught stealing this season...Has the fourth highest total amongst players in the league who can say the same...Teammate, SS Nick Ahmed, has stolen eight without getting caught this year...La Stella stole only two bases in 63 games last year with Low-A Rome and was caught twice as well...
WENT THE DAY WELL?: No, it didn't for Hillcats' starter RHP Gus Schlosser last night...He gave up a career-high seven runs, all earned, in four and two-thirds innings, which was a season-low mark...The seven runs matched the total given up by all four starters in the Carolina series Monday-Thursday in 23 innings...In the previous eight games for Lynchburg, their starters allowed ten earned runs in 47 innings, good enough for a 1.91 ERA...The team went 4-4 in those starts...
TODAY'S OPPOSING PITCHER: RHP Nicholas Tepesch was selected in the 14th round in 2010 out of the University of Missouri...Signed late, made professional debut in 2011...Was a two-time Big 12 All-Academic selection...Missouri's Gatorade Player of the Year as a senior at Blue Springs High School...Drafted 28th round out of high School in 2007 by the Red Sox, did not sign...Went 7-5 in first professional season with Low-A Hickory in 2011...Posted a 4.03 ERA in 29 games, 23 starts...Threw two complete games, both were seven innings...Struck out 118 batters to just 33 walks in 138.1 innings...Surrendered 14 home runs...Best career start came June 7, 2011...Went seven scoreless innings, scattering three hits and a walk, while striking out a career-high 10 batters...This year, he is 1-2 with a 3.29 ERA in five starts for Myrtle Beach...Makes his first start against the Hillcats tonight...
