Muskegon Lumberjacks News Release
MUSKEGON - On Friday night it took the Muskegon Lumberjacks (7-2-1-1, 16 pts.) 52 minutes of game time to find the back of the net against the Gamblers. Saturday night was a different story as the Jacks opened the scoring just 16 seconds into the contest. In the end though the story had the same ending as the Green Bay Gamblers (7-5-0-0, 14 pts.) picked up the 6-5 win in a shootout.
As mentioned above it didn't take long for the scoring to start. In fact, it only took Cody Croal (North Branch, MN) 16 seconds. After winning the opening faceoff Croal was able to hold possession at the top of the near side circle in the Green Bay zone. Croal worked his way across the slot and ripped a shot to the top shelf for his 5th goal of the campaign.
Less than five minutes later the Jacks doubled up with a power play goal from Sacha Boisvert (Trois-Rivieres, QC, CAN) at the 4:26 mark. Boisvert had the puck at the blue line and slid it down the far side wall to Ethan Whitcomb (St. Catherines, ON, CAN) who continued it to the corner to David Klee (Castle Rock, CO). As Klee moved behind the net he sent the puck back to the corner and Whitcomb to tap out front to Boisvert for the one time blast to the top portion of the far side of the net.
Green Bay scored the next three goals all by way of special teams. At the 6:55 mark of the first period Jayson Shaugabay found the back of the net while on the power play to cut the deficit in half ahead of the first intermission. In the second period Blake Bechen scored a power play goal of his own at the 10:36 mark before Jason Gallucci potted one while shorthanded just six minutes later.
The third and final period of regulation saw five total goals starting with the first at the 1:43 mark for Geno Carcone. William Hughes picked up the assist for his second point of the night.
Muskegon responded in a big way with three straight goals to close a two-goal deficit and take a lead. Boisvert scored his second goal of the game after Whitcomb's centering attempt ricocheted off his body and into the net. For Boisvert it's his 9th goal of the season putting him among the USHL league leaders.
Ty Henricks (Mission Viejo, CA) scored just 40 seconds later at the 6:44 mark to tie the game at 4 apiece. Henricks received a pass from Cooper Pierson (Zionsville, IN) in the slot and used a wicked wrist shot to beat the Gamblers goalie.
The Jacks regained the lead they had entering the second period at the 9:12 mark of the third on the back of a goal from Hunter Anderson (Manhattan Beach, CA). Ryan Koering (Eden Prairie, MN) gave the puck to Anderson in the neutral zone and the California native carried it into the offensive end on the near side wall and wristed a shot to the back of the net to take a lead.
Green Bay responded with a goal a couple of minutes later from Bechen for his second of the game, and after a scoreless overtime period sent out Julian Lutz in the fifth round of the shootout to find the back of the net and win the game. Lutz was the only player to score in the shootout.
Paxton Geisel (Estevan, SK, CAN) (4-0-0-1) played the whole game for the Jacks stopping 23 of the 28 shots he faced and stopping 4 out of 5 in the shootout. Adam Gajan (7-3-0-0) got the start for the second straight night for Green Bay and was lights out for the second straight night turning aside 38 of the 43 shots sent his way. Gajan stopped all 5 Muskegon players in the shootout.
Tomorrow afternoon the teams will close out the three-game series at Trinity Health Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 3 p.m. EDT on Princess and Hero Day. For tickets visit MuskegonLumberjacks.com or visit the box office located inside the VanDyke Mortgage Convention Center on game day.
