Hessler Returns to Inferno

COLUMBIA, S.C. (August 11, 2006) - Head Coach Troy Mann announced today that the Columbia Inferno have agreed to terms with defenseman Corey Hessler for the 2006-07 season. Hessler joins teammates Derick Martin, Dallas Flaman, Anthony Battaglia, Steve McJannet, Brad MacMillan and Chris Barr as the seventh player signed by the Inferno this year.

Hessler, 6'1, 205 lbs., began his professional career with the Columbia Inferno in 2002. In his rookie year, he played in 69 games, scoring 17 goals and 23 assists for 40 points. In addition, he appeared in 14 playoff games adding two goals and five assists for seven points as the Inferno advanced to the Kelly Cup Finals. He was also selected to represent Columbia at the 2003 ECHL All-Star game. During the 2003-04 season, Hessler skated in 57 games for the Inferno contributing six goals and 23 assists for 29 points, including 109 penalty minutes.

"I am looking forward to Corey returning to the Inferno. Corey is coming off of a great year in 2005-06 with Rockford (UHL)," stated Coach Mann. "Corey is a very good offensive defenseman who should make significant contributions to our power play. As one of our veterans, we need Corey to be a leader on the ice and in the locker room."

The Mendota Heights, Minnesota native split time with the Greenville Grrrowl and the Fresno Falcons during the 2004-05 season. Last year, Hessler played for the Rockford IceHogs of the United Hockey League where he was an assistant captain and was named to the 2005-06 UHL All-Star Team. He had nine goals and 32 assists for 41 points in 52 games with the IceHogs. He also spent time with the Milwaukee Admirals of the American Hockey League contributing four points (2g-2a) in 16 games.

"I am very excited to return to the Columbia Inferno," said Hessler. "The fans have always treated me well and I look forward to seeing everyone in October. I know I can help Coach Mann put this team back into the playoff race and contend for the Kelly Cup."
