Harrisburg Heat News Release
San Diego, CA - The Harrisburg Heat exploded for 17 second-half points en route to a 21-10 win over the San Diego Sockers at San Diego Sports Arena on Thursday night. With the win, the Heat improves to 11-16 on the season, while San Diego falls to 11-17. Raul Salas, now 1-7, records his first win in a Heat uniform with eight saves. Nick Vorberg (five saves) takes the loss in goal for the Sockers.
After a placid first quarter (San Diego's Paul Wright accounted for the only scoring with a 2pg at 2:12), the Sockers blew out of the gates in the second. Just 27 seconds into the quarter, Aaron Susi half-volleyed a 2pg over Salas, and eight seconds after that, Paul Wright picked off a Matt Tanzini pass and slid home an easy 2pg for a sudden 6-0 lead.
The Heat did not find the back of the net until a flurry of their own late in the half, beginning at 13:18 when Ato Leone ran down a loose ball just outside the box and slotted it home for a 2pg. Mike Henning followed in short order, pounding home his own rebound for a double 14 seconds later. It was 6-4, San Diego, at halftime.
After Carlos "Chile" Farias put the Sockers up 8-4 at the 49-second mark of the third, Henning (1:36) and Kevin Burk (6:00) scored 2pgs to create an 8-8 tie. Vorberg then replaced starter D.J. Horvath in goal for San Diego, and he was in net for only 41 seconds before Tanzini ripped a 3pg from the center point to give Harrisburg its first lead of the game, 11-8. The Heat eruption continued at 7:09, when Genoni Martinez's drive from the left wing caromed off Sockers defender Gaston Pernia and into the net for a 2pg and a 13-8 Heat advantage. Farias ended the Heat run at 13:17, slipping home a cross from Wright to make it 13-10 heading into the fourth.
Leone put the Heat up by five when he provided the finish to a series of precision passes at 1:28 of the final quarter to make it 15-10. At 5:55, David Bascome forced a turnover in his own end, raced through midfield, and blistered a 3pg past Vorberg for an 18-10 lead. And Marco Coria finished the night's scoring when he grabbed a loose ball and sent a long 3pg into a net left vacant by Sockers sixth attacker Robbie Aristodemo at 12:07.
NOTES: Bascome remains one point short of the 900-point mark for his career...Harrisburg is now 4-0 against the Sockers this season...Forward Nikola Vignjevic made his Heat debut, going scoreless...Harrisburg played without All-Star Marco Lopez (abdomen) and Gino DiFlorio (hamstring), neither of whom made the trip with the team...The Heat continues its current six-game road trip this Saturday, February 8 in Kansas City.
