MISL January Players of the Month

(Westport, Conn., February 6, 2003) – Prolific striker Dino Delevski of the Kansas City Comets and incomparable goalkeeper Victor Nogueira of the Milwaukee Wave have been named the MISL's Offensive and Defensive Players of the Month for January, the League announced on Thursday. Delevski was the MISL's leading scorer for January, while Nogueira was the League's most successful netminder.

Offensive Player of the Month:

Delevski recorded three 3pgs, 13 2pgs, and 11 assists for a League-high 46 points in January. The 26-year-old also accounted for two of Kansas City's game-winning goals during the month, leading to his first monthly award of the season.

The 2000-'01 Spalding Scoring Champion and MISL Most Valuable Player accounted for almost half of his League-leading 116 points in January, averaging almost six points per game in eight outings. Delevski's monthly highlights included two Player of the Week awards (January 5 and 19), an 11-point game against Harrisburg on January 4, and two nine-point games (January 11 against Cleveland and January 17 against San Diego).

The native of Macedonia, who was named to his third All-Star Game on February 5, leads the MISL in points, total goals (41), and 2pgs (33), is tied for the League lead with eight 3pgs, and is second with 26 assists. Delevski has scored at least one point in all 23 games he has played this season, and has scored in 25 consecutive regular season games dating back to last season. He needs only eight points to hit 500 for his young career.

Others Receiving Consideration:

Milwaukee Wave forward Greg Howes scored 11 goals and 26 points in eight games in January. The 25-year-old leads the MISL with seven game-winning goals, is tied for second with 31 total goals, and ranks fourth overall with 77 points.

San Diego Sockers midfielder Mariano Bollella scored 25 points (nine 2pgs, seven assists) in seven January contests. The 32-year-old also blocked 11 shots and scored one game-winning goal. The native of Buenos Aires, Argentina, has now scored 46 points for the season, tied for 17th in the League.

Cleveland Force striker Lee Edgerton scored 23 points (eight 2pgs, seven assists) in eight games during the month, including 12 points in two games on January 24 and 25. Edgerton, 28, is tied for 17th in the MISL with 46 points.

Defensive Player of the Month:

Nogueira continued one of the best seasons of his lengthy career with an outstanding January, going 5-1 with a 6.34 points against average in six starts. The 43-year-old saved 84 of the 102 shots he faced during the month for an .824 save percentage, playing a key role as the Wave became the first team in the MISL to clinch a spot in the 2003 Playoffs.

The native of Mozambique, South Africa, allowed only one double-digit point total in January, surrendering 13 points in a 19-13 win over Harrisburg on the 11th. Nogueira held the Cleveland Force to four points in a 13-4 win on January 18, and nearly shut out the San Diego Sockers in a 19-2 victory on January 24.

For the season, Nogueira leads the League with a dazzling 7.47 points against average, and is also first in wins (17) and save percentage (.772). Nogueira, who has won or shared the League's Goalkeeper of the Year Award seven consecutive times, was named to his eighth All-Star Game on February 5.

Others Receiving Consideration:

Baltimore Blast goalkeeper Scott Hileman went 3-1 with a 7.31 PAA and an .803 save percentage in January. The 30-year-old saved 22 of 23 shots in a 7-2 win over the first-place Philadelphia KiXX on January 31.

Kansas City Comets defender Alex Zotinca scored 14 points (four 2pgs, six assists) and blocked eight shots in seven January contests. He also appeared in four games as Kansas City's sixth attacker, saving three of four shots faced.

Harrisburg Heat defender Genoni Martinez blocked 16 shots and scored 13 points (3pg, three 2pgs, four assists) in January. The 27-year-old Martinez is the MISL's highest-scoring defender (61 points) and has taken over the League lead in blocks (61).
