Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release
Oshawa, Ont. (Sunday, Jan. 21, 2007) - The St. Michael's Majors couldn't hold onto a late lead this evening and were forced to watch the game slip out of their hands. They ended up falling 8-6 to the Oshawa Generals, pushing their record to 14-30-1-1 on the year.
John Tavares opened the scoring at 2:16 of the 1st period off of Brett MacLean and Peter Aston feeds, on the power-play. Matt Caria responded for St. Mike's at 3:06 in an unassisted effort. However, Brett Parnham put the home squad back in front at 7:05 with Corey Cowick and Dale Mitchell providing the support. Yet, the Majors bounced right back with Cassidy Preston and Jason Cassidy goals before the end of the frame. The helpers were contributed to Dustin Ekelman, Kaspars Daugavins and Kriss Grundmanis.
The Majors came out flat at the start of the 2nd period and fell behind early. Cowick's goal at 1:05, from Kyle Paige and Shea Kewin, was followed up by Mitchell's power-play marker from Aston and Michael Del Zotto at 6:25.
The lead change triggered an offensive outburst from the Majors as Preston connected again, on the man-advantage, at 8:26, and Cassidy and Jesse Messier scored at 1:59 and 9:17 into the final frame. The assists on these goals were credited to Messier, Caria, Matt McCready, Mike Pelech, Michael Haley and Darrell Simich.
Unfortunately, the Generals turned it up a notch and never looked back, with goals at 11:11, 12:56, 14:12 and 19:46 (empty-net, power-play) to grab the lead for good. The final Oshawa goalscorers were Parnham, Aston, Mitchell and MacLean, respectively.
The Majors finished the night 1 for 6 on the power-play while the Generals were 3 for 7. Wayne Savage produced 36 saves for the Majors while Mark Packwood had 29 stops for Oshawa. The game's three stars were Parnham (1st), Aston (2nd) and Cassidy (3rd).
The Majors now travel to London to battle the Knights on Friday evening at 7:30 p.m. Then, they return home to host the Plymouth Whalers next Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m.
