Lowell Spinners News Release
NORWICH, CONN. ? The Lowell Spinners rallied to force extra innings but a leadoff double on a misplayed flyball and a walk-off suicide squeeze resulted in a Connecticut Tigers win, as the Tigers completed the three-game sweep in 10 innings Sunday evening at Dodd Stadium, 3-2.
The loss was the Spinners fourth consecutive defeat.
Scoreless through 2.5 innings, Connecticut (34-38) got on the board in the bottom half of the third inning. Jake Stewart delivered a one-out triple, but was erased when the Spinners' infield played in and Mookie Betts cut him down at the plate. It was for not however, as Danry Vasquez took an 0-2 offering from Sergio Gomez over the right field wall, giving the Tigers a 2-0 lead.
Lowell (34-39) had a chance to score in the top half of the fifth inning. Nick Moore led off the inning with a single, advancing on a sacrifice fly by Aneury Tavarez. A Kevin Heller walk advanced Moore to second and both men adavnced into scoring position on a passed ball with two outs, but Mike Miller grounded out to end the inning.
The Spinners would once again strand a pair in the sixth inning before breaking through for a run in the eighth inning. Miller led off the inning with a single, advancing to second on a walk by Jose Colorado. A Deven Marrero sacrifice bunt advanced both men into scoring position and Jake Davies plated Miller on an RBI groundout, cutting the deficit to one.
After Moore struck out the start the ninth, Tavarez doubled to right, coming around to score on an RBI double by Heller, knotting the score at two. The Spinners had a chance to take the lead, but Oscar Perez's liner up the middle was snagged on the mound and Heller was doubled off second to end the inning.
It was heartbreak time for the Spinners in the bottom half of the 10th as Jordan Dean hit a fly to right that deflected off Tavarez's glove for a leadoff double. A sacrifice bunt advanced Dean to third and Stewart laid down a perfect suicide squeeze, scoring Dean to walk-off with a win.
Gomez faired well in his New York-Penn League debut, getting better as the game went on. He allowed the two runs on four hits and a walk, striking out four over five innings. Jadd Schmeltzer followed, extending his scoreless streak to 12.1 since coming off the disabled list August 5, allowing two hits over two scoreless, striking out two. Braden Kapteyn was likewise stellar, limiting the Tigers to just one hit over two scoreless, extending his own scoreless streak to 18 innings. Yunior Ortega (2-4, 3.91) was the hard luck loser in the 10th.
Offensively the Spinners more than doubled their hit total from the first two games, picking up seven hits. Marrero led the way, going 2-for-4, while Heller and Tavarez each doubled.
The Spinners hit the road one last time, traveling to Brooklyn for the season's final three-games. Frank Montas will make his Spinners debut with a 7:05 first pitch from MCU Park.
