Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release

WATERLOO, IA- The Waterloo Black Hawks scored a pair of power plays and were the beneficiaries of a fortunate bounce that helped them earn a 4-2 win over the Dubuque Fighting Saints Friday night at the Young Arena. Waterloo beat Dubuque for the third time this season and handed the Fighting Saints their third straight loss.

After a pair of slow starts last weekend, Dubuque opened the scoring Friday night. Brian Bowen notched his 14th goal of the season at the 7:12 mark off a Waterloo turnover. Dylan Gambrell pressed Tyson McLellan from the Black Hawks, and the Waterloo forward lost the puck at his own blue line. Gambrell fed Robby Jackson, and the forward made a beautiful backdoor pass to Bowen who elevated a shot over an outstretched Waterloo goaltender Cale Morris.

The Black Hawks would tie the game late in the period on the power play. Swedish forward Henrik Rommel scored his 14th goal of the year 17:15. Dubuque goaltender Jacob Nehama made the initial stop on a Ronnie Hein wraparound attempt, but the rebound popped off his pad right to Rommel for the goal.

It would take until the final minute of the second period for either team to take the lead. Boeser scored his 29th goal of the season for Waterloo on the power play at 19:37. Phil Beaulieu fired a wrist shot from the right point that Nehama stopped with his right pad. The rebound popped right to Boeser and the forward scored his 12th power play goal of the year to give Waterloo the 2-1 lead.

The Black Hawks would score the eventual game-winning goal in the third period on a fortunate bounce. Waterloo forward Nick Swaney attempted a cross-ice pass to a teammate. The puck instead deflected off the right skate of Dubuque defender Michael Davies into the goal to make it 3-1 Black Hawks at 7:18.

The Fighting Saints would stick around in the game as Gambrell cut the lead to just a goal at 14:39 of the third period. Sasha Larocque fed a stretch pass to Gambrell down the left wing. The forward dipped his shoulder and took the puck to the goal, bouncing a shot off Morris' chest protector and into the net to make it 3-2 Waterloo.

Dubuque's late attempts to tie the game would be denied, and McLellan intercepted Seamus Malone's cross ice pass and scored an empty net goal with six seconds left to give Waterloo the 4-2 win.

Dubuque went 0-for-3 on the power play while Waterloo was 2-for-3. Dubuque outshot the Black Hawks 36-32. The Black Hawks now trail Dubuque by just two points in Prairie Farms Cowbell Cup play.

Dubuque continues a busy weekend of action tomorrow on home ice. It's Irish Night as the Fighting Saints host Green Bay at 7:05 p.m. Tickets start at just $10 and are available online at DubuqueFightingSaints.com or by calling 563.583.6880.
