Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Coming back from a 2-0 deficit for the second consecutive night on Saturday, the Waterloo Black Hawks claimed a 5-3 road win against the United States Hockey League's best team, the Green Bay Gamblers.
Seventeen good minutes in the first period were undone at the tail end of a Black Hawks power play. A steal led to a two-on-one Green Bay rush as the teams came to even strength. Stephon Williams made a miraculous save on Sheldon Dries' first opportunity, but Dries put in a second chance to break the 0-0 stalemate at 17:11. Just less than two minutes later, Nicholas Schilkey beat Williams from a sharp angle when he found an elusive puck at the side of the goal.
The Black Hawks scored early and often in the second period, beginning with a goal 48 seconds into the frame by Vince Hinostroza. The veteran center took a cross-ice feed from Tyler Zepeda, then cut across the top of the crease, pulling the puck to his backhand, and sliding it by Ryan McKay. Hinostroza scored again during a two-man advantage at 7:40 after a Black Hawk was knocked on top of McKay before he could control a rebound.
Waterloo took the lead for the first time at 13:25 of the second. Mitch Witek beat his former team for a goal, blasting a shot from the top of the left circle over the shoulder of McKay into the top corner. The Gamblers converted a power play to tie it at 15:02 when Sam Herr scored on a backhander. However, the Hawks went in front again with less than 54 seconds before intermission. Taylor Cammarata's wraparound pass found Aaron Pearce at the top of the crease, and the Black Hawks captain stuffed in the go-ahead goal.
Scott MacDonald nailed down the decision, scoring an empty net goal with 1:02 remaining, after an otherwise scoreless third period. Eamon McAdam, who came on in relief at the start of the second, picked up the victory with eleven saves.
Just two games remain on the Black Hawks' schedule, both at home next weekend. Waterloo hosts the Tri-City Storm Friday and the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders Saturday. Tickets for each 7:05 PM contest are available online from waterlooblackhawks.com. The Black Hawks box office will open for phone and in-person orders beginning Wednesday at 11:30 AM.
