Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
The Waterloo Black Hawks could not hang on to a third period lead Friday, falling to the Dubuque Fighting Saints on the road 4-3.
Vince Hinostroza fired a shot over the shoulder of Matt Morris 59 seconds into the third period to give the Hawks their first and only lead of the night, 3-2. The advantage lasted just less than five minutes until Matthew Caito's long shot snuck through traffic and into the net at 5:58. The winner came at 8:21 when a rebound off the post bounced to Milos Bubela who did not miss the follow-up.
The Saints had jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period. Kevin Morris capped a two-on-one rush when he received a feed from Bubela 4:58 into the game. Zemgus Girgensons added to the edge when he converted a shorthanded penalty shot at 8:23. However, the Hawks bounced back in a big way during the final minute of the period. Matias Cleland dropped Michael Downing with a right-handed haymaker during a scrap. Then with just eight-tenths of a second before intermission, Mike Huntebrinker put the Hawks on the scoreboard off a give-and-go with A.J. Michaelson, firing a shot over the left shoulder of Matt Morris.
Waterloo's rally continued early in the second. Mark Naclerio was in traffic in the slot but laid a pass onto the stick of Taylor Cammarata. The Hawk's leading scorer found a gap between Matt Morris' left leg and the post at 8:59.
The loss ended the Black Hawks' four-game winning streak. Coupled with wins by the Omaha Lancers and Lincoln Stars, Waterloo now sits five points out of first and four back from second place in the USHL Western Conference. Waterloo and Lincoln each have three games remaining, while the Lancers have just two left on the schedule.
The Black Hawks skate on unfriendly ice for the final time during the 2011-2012 regular season Saturday when visiting the Green Bay Gamblers. The matchup begins at 7:05. Next weekend, Waterloo returns home to close out the pre-playoffs schedule against the Tri-City Storm and Cedar Rapids RoughRiders.
