Hawks Fall Despite Special Teams

Although they did not score a five-on-five goal Saturday, the Waterloo Black Hawks only narrowly came up short in a 5-3 contest against the Sioux City Musketeers at Young Arena.

The visitors attempted the game's first five shots, but Waterloo still jumped ahead by scoring on their first two chances of the night. Seven seconds into a Black Hawks power play at 7:24, Michael LaStarza pulled the trigger on an opportunity from the top of the right wing circle, beating goaltender Akira Schmid. Less than three minutes later, Waterloo was playing shorthanded. John Waldron chipped a puck to neutral ice, setting up a two-on-none rush through the neutral zone. When Waldron's pass across the slot clicked with Owen Ozar, Schmid had little chance to deny the Hawks' early season goal leader.

However, Sioux City rallied to the lead in the first nine minutes of the second. Carryover power play time from the first period resulted in the Musketeers' first score at :37, when defenseman Gabe Blanchard brought the puck deep into Hawks' territory and set up Bennett Schimek near the front of the net. Another special teams conversion at 6:11 by Ethan Edwards on a try from the right circle tied the score. Sioux City's first lead came on Brendan Olson's transition chance at 8:44.

Waterloo had one more power play during the game, and they capitalized even more quickly than on their first opportunity. Matt Argentina won the initial faceoff back to Ethan Szmagaj at the right point. His shot found its way through traffic and into the net at 12:27, just three seconds after play had restarted. The showing by Waterloo's power play combinations was an impressive boost after the unit began the year with one goal in the first 19 chances.

Yet for the second time on Saturday, Sioux City scored in the first minute after an intermission. Brian Carrabes won a puck in the Hawks zone, setting up Carter Loney from close range at :48 of the third for the eventual game-winner. Justin Hryckowian capped the scoring with an empty-netter from the neutral zone with 2.2 seconds to go.

Sioux City has now won two of three games against the Hawks this year, with three head-to-head matchups remaining on the schedule. The teams face each other again on the day after Christmas.

Meanwhile, Waterloo's next game is on the road versus the Omaha Lancers on Friday, December 18th.
