Hawks Fall 5-3 to Visiting Kootenay Ice

The Portland Winterhawks (21-6-0-3) dropped a 5-3 decision to the visiting Kootenay Ice (19-7-0-2) Wednesday at the Memorial Coliseum.
The Winterhawks opened the scoring on a power play 2:13 into the game when Nino Niederreiter slid a pass to Brad Ross alone in front of the net, who beat Kootenay netminder Nathan Lieuwen to make it 1-0.
The Ice responded with two goals in a span of 1:28, the first at the 3:54 mark when Kevin King scored, the second at the 5:24 mark from Brendan Hurley to make it 2-1.The Ice extended the lead to 3-1 at the 12:39 mark on a goal by Max Reinhart while the two teams were playing 4-on-4.
The Hawks got one back late in the period on a power play when Derrick Pouliot carried the puck into the Kootenay zone and found Ryan Johansen in front, who fired it past Lieuwen with 14 seconds to go to make it 3-2 heading into the second period.
At the 6:34 mark of the second Oliver Gabriel was awarded a penalty shot after being hauled down on a breakaway, but Lieuwen stopped Gabriel on his attempt to keep the score at 3-2. The Ice then made it 4-2 at the 9:44 mark on a goal by Joe Antilla, which would stand as the lone goal of the period.
The Hawks cut the deficit to 4-3 at the 3:27 mark of the third period when Gabriel fired a pass to Riley Boychuk, sending Boychuk into the Kootenay zone on a breakaway, where he beat Lieuwen to bring the Hawks to within one. However, that would be as close as Portland would get, and Kootenay added an empty net goal with 28.2 seconds left to seal the win.
The Winterhawks return to the ice Friday night when they host the Tri-City Americans at the Rose Garden at 7 p.m.
