Boise Hawks News Release
EUGENE, Ore. - James Pugliese and three relievers combined on a four-hit shutout, as the Boise Hawks ended a four-game season-opening losing streak, blanking the Eugene Emeralds, 7-0, before 4,265 fans at PK Park.
Pugliese went five innings, allowing just three hits and striking out a career-high seven to earn the win. Jasvir Rakkar added two shutout innings, with Matt Iannazzo and Mike Hamann closing out the game as Boise (1-0) won their opener for the first time since a 6-5 victory over Eugene in 2008.
The Hawks batted around for five runs in the third inning to chase Emeralds (0-1) starter Erik Cabrera. Carlos Penalver got Boise on the board with an RBI single to make it 1-0. After Shawon Dunston Jr. scored on a throwing error, Kevin Encarnacion doubled home Penalver to make it 3-0. Danny Lockhart capped the inning with an RBI single.
Boise added to their lead in the seventh on a long home run to center by Jacob Rogers - part of a 12-hit attack.
Dunston went 4-for-6 in the win, with Lockhart and Encarnacion each adding two hits. Franmil Reyes went 2-for-4 in the loss for the Ems.
Game 2 of the series is tomorrow night at 8:05 p.m., with Paul Blackburn meeting Yimmi Brasoban.
