Garrett Wait scored twice, including the game-winning goal Wednesday, and the Waterloo Black Hawks topped the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders, 3-2, at Cedar Rapids Ice Arena.
It took just 21 seconds for Waterloo to jump in front; Wait stuffed in the early goal standing to the blocker side of goalie Ben Blacker after Alex Robert had created the scoring chance.
A power play faceoff win gave the Hawks a chance to double the lead in the second period. Cameron Orchard knocked the draw back to Ben Newhouse, and the defenseman's shot from the right point found the net at Blacker's stick side.
The RoughRiders made the score 2-1 at 4:09 of the third when Zac Robbins scored from the right circle in transition, with traffic going to the net. Justin Cole delivered the equalizer, snapping a shot under the crossbar to cap a two-on-one rush at 12:43. However, Wait put Waterloo back in front with 3:03 to play, benefitting from a behind-the-net setup originating from Shane Bowers.
After a day off, the Hawks continue a busy preseason schedule against the Dubuque Fighting Saints at home on Friday. All tickets for the 7:05 matchup are $7 and available online from waterlooblackhawks.com or by calling the Domino's Black Hawks Box Office at (319) 291-7680.
