Hawks Defeat Generals 8-0 in Empty Arena on New Year's Eve
The Tomahawks served up some New Year's Eve entertainment to an empty 1ST SUMMIT ARENA Thursday afternoon as they defeated the Northeast Generals Thursday afternoon. Goaltender Sam Evola stopped all 27 shots faced and there were six total goal scorers on the afternoon.
The game started out with an early penalty as Northeast's Ricky Boysen was call for hooking only 1:05 into the game. John Gelatt opened the scoring, netting his 12th goal of the season. Jay Ahearn and Drew Murphy added to the scoreboard making it 3-0 to end the 1st period.
Gelatt and Ahearn were back at it in the 2nd period to give themselves both two goal games. Both scored on the power play. Only 2:52 into the 2nd period, Boysen received a five-minute major and a game misconduct after boarding Tomahawks Reed Stark in the corner. Stark went down, but left the ice on his own. With 8:14 remaining in the 2nd period, defenseman David Paluch netted his first goal in a Hawks uniform unassisted to make the score 6-0 for the Hawks. Shortly after Alex Gritz scored his fourth goal of the season to end the 2nd period with the Hawks up 7-0.
The final frame was a bit more quiet with only one goal, coming from Dominic Schimizzi. Three stars of the game were John Gelatt (1): 2G, 1A, Jay Ahearn (2): 2G, 2A, and Sam Evola (3): 27 saves and a shutout.
