Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Waterloo, Iowa-The Waterloo Black Hawks paused from their Clark Cup playoff run Tuesday to look toward next season and beyond with the selection of Liam Pecararo and five other players during the 2012 USHL Futures Draft.

On the evening before their Western Conference Finals series against the Lincoln Stars was scheduled to begin, the Hawks drafted Pecararo with the second overall pick. A member of the Boston Advantage Midget Major (U-18) team, the 16-year-old forward scored eleven goals with a team-leading 41 assists in 40 games. Pecararo is a University of Maine recruit for the fall of 2014.

Each spring, the Futures Draft allows USHL member clubs to select up to six prospects. Only players born in 1996 were eligible for the 2012 Futures Draft. Waterloo was awarded the second overall pick in a random drawing. Three weeks from now, older players will be acquired via the 2012 USHL Entry Draft on May 22nd.

The Black Hawks other selections Tuesday evening were:

Name Rd./Pick Pos. Hometown 2011-2012 Team

Charlie Manley 3/31st Defenseman Orchard Park, NY Selects Hockey Academy

Logan Halladay 3/37th Goalie Cary, NC Carolina Jr. Hurricanes U-16

Andrew Zerban 4/59th Forward Elk River, MN Elk River High School

Alex Copa 5/61st Defenseman Ham Lake, MN Blaine High School

Michael Sauer 6/89th Forward Bemidji, MN Bemidji High School

Eight regulars in Waterloo's 2011-2012 lineup were acquired during past Futures Drafts. Taylor Cammarata (2011), Vince Hinostroza (2010), A.J. Michaelson (2010), and Jay Williams (2009) were each former first round selections. In addition to Cammarata, forward Tyler Sheehy also appeared for the Hawks briefly during the 2011-2012 regular season after being chosen during last year's Futures Draft. Generally a process for acquiring talented players who will develop for a season or more at a lower level of hockey, five of the top nine overall selections in the 2011 Futures Draft were regulars on a USHL roster last season. Four of the subsequent 81 players chosen were added to a USHL team fulltime before the season ended.

Waterloo returns to playoff action Wednesday with Game One of the Western Conference finals against the Lincoln Stars on the road at the Ice Box at the Nebraska State Fairgrounds. The series comes to Young Arena for Game Three on Saturday, and good seats are available for the 7:05 matchup. Tickets may be ordered online from waterlooblackhawks.com or by calling (319) 291-7680. The Black Hawks Box Office will open for in-person orders at 11:30 AM Wednesday.
