Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Week in Review
Victories in Games Three and Four of the Black Hawks' second round playoff series allowed Waterloo to dispatch the Omaha Lancers. Friday, Mike Huntebrinker had a goal and assist, while Stephon Williams made 25 saves in a 4-2 decision. The next night, Ian McCoshen and Aaron Pearce scored twice as Waterloo claimed a 5-1 win. It was the first time the Hawks have come out on top in three postseason series versus Omaha.
Huntebrinker Tops Charts
Forward Mike Huntebrinker is in a five-way tie as the USHL's postseason scoring leader with seven points. Alex Broadhurst of the Green Bay Gamblers and Daniil Tarasov of the Indiana Ice are the two remaining active players he is tied with. The first-year Hawk was held without a point in just one of six playoff appearances. He completed the regular season with 17 goals and 17 assists in 54 games.
Three Seed the Charm?
Waterloo is the only team remaining in the playoffs which did not receive a first-round bye. Fargo, Dubuque, and Youngstown each advanced from the opening round, but were subsequently eliminated in their next series. The Hawks are trying to become the first #3 seed from either conference to reach the Clark Cup finals since 2009. That year, Indiana and Fargo played for the championship after each finishing third in their division.
Big Scoring from the Blue Line
In Games Three and Four against Omaha, defensemen were important to the Black Hawks' offense. Alex Barron scored his first goal of the postseason to tie Game Three, 1-1. Ian McCoshen did the same thing in Game Four, then added another score in the second period. Mitch Witek had an assist in each game, giving him five during the playoffs. That total ranks second in the USHL among all players, regardless of position.
Unprecedented Playoff Matchup
The Black Hawks did not collide with the Lincoln Stars in the postseason during the first 16 years Lincoln was a league member. The streak comes to an end tomorrow. Waterloo will have met every league team in the playoffs, except Fargo, Muskegon, Team USA, Youngstown, and the new Dubuque Fighting Saints. None of those franchises were part of the USHL prior to 2008-2009.
