Hawkeye's BookWorms set to begin second year

FARGO, N.D. - The second year of Hawkeye's BookWorms will kick off on Friday, January 26 with the two school assemblies at West Fargo's Westside Elementary. The assemblies begin at 1:30 p.m. and 2:00 p.m.

Hawkeye's BookWorms, started by the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks Baseball Club in 2006, is a school-based reading program that encourages children to read by giving them a unique reward: a ticket to RedHawks baseball game. Each child needs to hit a Home Run to get the ticket, but they get great prizes as they advance around the bases. All schools participating getting posters to put in the classrooms to keep track of the student's progress.

Otter Tail Power Company is the Title Sponsor of the program and provides the tickets for each student as they get to home plate. Students will also receive prizes for reaching first, second and third bases. The prizes for 2007 are:

1st Base: Personal Pan Pizza from PIZZA HUT

2nd Base: Kids Meal from CHILI'S

3rd Base: RedHawks Mini-Pennant from MIDWEST DAIRY ASSOCIATION

Home Plate: Ticket to 2007 RedHawks Game from OTTER TAIL POWER CO.

The program was originally designed to reach metro-area students, but has quickly expanded into rural the areas of North Dakota and Minnesota. Last winter, more than 6,200 students participated in the first year of the program. Over 8,000 students are enrolled in the program this winter, and the RedHawks are still accepting applications from area schools.
