HUNTSVILLE, AL - The Huntsville Havoc got dropped two more one-goal games 2-1 in a shootout to the Mississippi RiverKings on Tuesday and a 3-2 decision to the Pensacola Ice Flyers on Saturday but picked up a huge 6-1 win over Pensacola on Friday night.
Tuesday, December 23 - Huntsville 1, Mississippi 2 - SO
SOUTHAVEN, MS - Matt Harrington scored the clinching goal in a shootout, and Mississippi RiverKings picked up the extra point in a 2-1 (1-0 SO) win over the Huntsville Havoc.
The two teams needed nine turns to complete the shootout.
Mississippi RiverKings came back from a one-goal deficit to capture the victory. Mississippi RiverKings trailed 1-0 after a short-handed goal by Huntsville's Luke Greiner at 17:37 in the first period. Mississippi RiverKings knotted things up at 1-1 on a goal by Matt Whitehead at 17:17 in the second period.
Mississippi RiverKings stifled the Havoc's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. With 49 shots on target during the contest, Mississippi RiverKings exceeded the 30.7 shots it averages per game this year.
Huntsville excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in eight chances. The Havoc average 24.9 shots on goal per game, but only sent 19 pucks on net against Mississippi RiverKings. Huntsville was often in penalty trouble, as it ended with eight minors and one major for 21 minutes in penalty time.
More assists for Huntsville came via Drew Akins, who had one.
Mississippi RiverKings' Adam Courchaine stopped 18 shots out of the 19 that he faced. Mississippi RiverKings ended with 15 minutes in penalty time with five minors and one major. Kevin Genoe recorded 47 saves for the Havoc. Huntsville registered zero goals on three power play opportunities.
Friday, December 26 - Pensacola 1, Huntsville 6
HUNTSVILLE, AL - The Huntsville Havoc were firing on all cylinders against the Pensacola Ice Flyers, and when the final buzzer sounded Havoc emerged with a 6-1 win.
Pensacola was stymied by Huntsville's netminder Kevin Genoe, who stopped 36 shots during the victory. Genoe certainly lowered his goals against average, which was 2.63 entering the contest.
The Havoc surpassed their usual scoring output this season. Huntsville has scored at the pace of 2.4 goals per game during the current campaign. With 32 shots on target during the contest, the Havoc exceeded the 20.4 shots they average per game this year.
Huntsville was led by Mark Anthoine, who grabbed one goal and two assists. Anthoine scored 15:48 into the second period to make the score 3-1 Huntsville. Huntsville also had goals scored by Drew Akins, who had two and Curtis Megginson, Stuart Stefan, and Corey Bellamy, who scored one goal each. More assists for Huntsville came via Ray Ortiz, who had two and Dane Erickson, Luke Greiner, Joe Tolles, Jarred Mohr, and Jacob Johnstone, who contributed one each.
The Ice Flyers' offense operated below their season average. Pensacola averages 3.5 goals per game. The Ice Flyers gave up more goals than its normal season average. Pensacola averages 2.4 goals allowed per game. The Ice Flyers' offense rang up 37 shots on the Havoc's net.
Pensacola was led by Michael Budd, who scored the team's only goal. Budd scored on the power play 6:34 into the second period to make the score 1-1. The Ice Flyers had taken the advantage when Huntsville's Megginson got sent off for slashing. Nick McParland picked up the assist.
The Havoc incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with seven minors. Max Strang recorded 26 saves for Pensacola. The Ice Flyers incurred four minutes in penalty time with two minors.
Saturday, December 27 - Pensacola 3, Huntsville 2
HUNTSVILLE, AL - The Huntsville Havoc tried to dig themselves out of a three-goal hole, but the Pensacola Ice Flyers held on for a 3-2 victory.
Pensacola made the score 3-0 on a goal by Nick McParland at 5:42 in the second period, and Huntsville got as close as 3-2 when Luke Greiner scored 6:49 into the third period.
McParland had two goals to lead the Ice Flyers to victory.
Pensacola racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with eight minors and one major for 21 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 15.0 minutes per game the Ice Flyers had been spending in the box. Pensacola put 32 shots on net during the contest, more than the 25.7 it averages per game.
Pensacola also got a goal from Adam Pawlick as well. In addition, Pensacola received assists from Cody Ferriero, who had two and Michael Budd, Brett Beebe, and Corey Banfield, who each chipped in one.
The Havoc's penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on three Pensacola power plays. The 27 shots that Huntsville put on net surpassed the Havoc's average of 20.4 shots per game this season.
Huntsville was helped by Drew Akins, who racked up one goal. Akins scored on the power play 1:15 into the third period to make the score 3-1 Pensacola. The Havoc had taken the advantage when the Ice Flyers' Ferriero got sent off for tripping. Stuart Stefan picked up the assist. Other players who recorded assists for Huntsville were Curtis Megginson and Joe Tolles, who contributed one each.
Max Strang recorded 25 saves for Pensacola. Kevin Genoe made 29 saves for Huntsville on 32 shots. The Havoc totaled 15 minutes in penalty time with five minors and one major and went 1-for-6 on the power play.
