Hats off to Brayden Schenn

Brayden Schenn readily admitted that there was some additional motivation for his first game against Manchester. "The team that traded you, you want to do well against them. That's what I'm going to look to do and I'll try to have a big game," said Schenn the day before the matchup.
Big game indeed! Schenn put up a natural hat trick with two wristers followed by an interception and breakaway conversion as the Phantoms won on the road 4-1 Wednesday morning.
It was Schenn's second career hat trick and was also the eighth all-time in Adirondack Phantoms' history. Schenn was previously a 5th overall selection of the Los Angeles Kings in 2009. He was traded to the Flyers organization a couple of summers ago. And this was the first game against either Los Angeles or Manchester for the 21-year-old phenom.
Schenn's other hat trick came in just his second game with the Phantoms on October 14, 2011 in a 6-3 victory over Bridgeport at the Glens Falls Civic Center. The most recent Adirondack Phantoms' hat trick was on April 7, 2012 when Matthew Ford led the way in a 5-3 victory at the Albany Devils.
Schenn extended his team lead in scoring and now has seven goals and 14 points on the season. Ben Holmstrom assisted on two of his three goals. In the process, Adirondack took down the first-place team in the Atlantic Division as the Manchester Monarchs fell to 7-4-1. The Phantoms improved to 6-6-0 overall and are now 2-1-0 more than halfway through their five-game road trip.
The game was an unusual 10:00 am start-time on a Kids' Education Day promotion held by the Manchester Monarchs.
In the shadows of Schenn's accomplishment was another impressive performance by rookie goaltender Cal Heeter who turned aside 36 of 37 Manchester shots he faced to record his second win in a row. Garrett Roe scored the other goal for the Phantoms.
Brandon Kozun gave Manchester the lead in the first period on a scramble in front of Heeter. The goal came just as a Manchester power play had expired but they were still pressuring in Adirondack's zone.
Just a few minutes later, Schenn would quickly score off a Ben Holmstrom faceoff win blasting his wrister past losing goaltender Martin Jones just three seconds into Adirondack's first power play of the game.
The score would remain tied at 1-1 all the way to the second intermission as the Phantoms hung on through the second period. Manchester outshot Adirondack 15-7 in the middle frame but Heeter turned aside all 15 shots he faced and kept the score even thereby setting up the big third-period scoring spurt.
Adirondack would break the game wide open with three straight goals in a seven minute stretch.
Eric Wellwood and Ben Holmstrom both had chances in the opening moments of the third when Wellwood pushed the puck to Schenn in the high slot who snapped in his second goal of the morning just 20 seconds into the period.
Adirondack continued on the attack after assuming the lead and Brayden Schenn jumped out for a steal at the Manchester line and then converted on his breakaway for his third goal of the game. A loyal Phantoms fan sitting behind the Adirondack bench through his hat onto the ice in recognition of the achievement and the Phantoms were ahead 3-1.
Seven minutes into the period. Matthew Ford would corral the puck along the end-boards on the power play and then find Garrett Roe on the left-wing side of the crease who appeared to backhand in his third goal of the season for a 4-1 lead which would go on to be the final. Roe now has two goals in the last three games.
Adirondack went 2-for-4 on the power play and remain undefeated in games in which they score a power play goal; 6-0-0. The Phantoms are 5-0-0 in games in which they score three or more goals.
This was Adirondack's lone trip to Manchester this year. The Monarchs will visit Glens Falls on Saturday, December 15 in the last game of the season series.
The Phantoms continue their road-trip Friday and Saturday nights at the Binghamton Senators and Syracuse Crunch. Adirondack returns to the Glens Falls Civic Center on Wednesday, November 21 for their first home game in over two weeks. That game begins a big Thanksgiving Feast Weekend of Hockey at the GFCC featuring three home games in four days over the holiday. Call the Phantoms for tickets at 518-480-3355.
