Hartford Draw Indy 1-1 in Booking-Filled Match
June 10, 2023 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Hartford Athletic News Release
Hartford Athletic grabbed the lead early in tonight's match, but could not keep it. A late goal by Indy Eleven sent both teams home with one point in a chippy match that totaled three red cards.
After a corner kick was looped into the box just in front of goal in the sixth minute, Adrian Diz Pe collided with Joe Rice while trying to get his head to the ball. He fell to the ground after the whistle and caught Niall Logue up high with his foot, and was given a red card. This was the first red card for Indy this year and the first of Pe's career.
Pouncing on the man-up opportunity quickly, Kyle Edwards tipped a pass between two Eleven defenders, leading to him running down the pitch alone. One-on-one with the keeper, he put the ball into the lower left corner and gave Athletic the 1-0 lead in the 12th minute.
The rest of the first half saw no tilt towards either team, even with only ten on the pitch for Indy. Hartford generated a few chances but nothing came of them. The two best opportunities came off the foot of Prince Saydee. The first came from a brilliant through ball from Luke Merrill that led Saydee into the box and forced a quality save from Yannik Oettl, and the next was a shot on target from about 25 yards out.
Hartford lost its man advantage four minutes into the second half when defender Triston Hodge received his second yellow card, evening the match at ten men per side. Like Indy, this was Hartford's first man sent off this season as well.
Athletic took six shots before stoppage time after the booking to Hodge, with their best chance coming on a left-footed shot from Antoine Hoppenot that forced another save from Oettl. Indy fired away, taking eight shots before putting their first on target and equalizing in the 85th minute. Off of a throw-in, Blake got a pass at the top of the box from Sebastián Guenzatti and he rifled the ball past Joe Rice to tie the game 1-1.
In stoppage time, Antoine Hoppenot broke free from the Indy defense. Indy defender Gustavo Rissi slid into Hoppenot's legs, drawing a red card and giving Hartford a free kick about three yards outside the box. Juan Pablo Torres could not convert the kick and the game ended in a draw.
Coming into this match, Hartford and Indy were the first and third-leading yellow-card offenders, respectively. The teams made their aggressiveness apparent tonight as they combined for five yellow cards and three red cards.
Defender Edgardo Rito made his debut for Hartford, being subbed on in the 40th minute for Niall Logue. Rito was acquired this week from Oakland Roots SC.
Hartford Athletic go home to host Detroit City FC on Wednesday and Charleston Battery on Saturday. Both matches kick off at 7 PM at Trinity Health Stadium.
