November 30, 2020 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Hartford Athletic News Release
HARTFORD, Conn. - Hartford Athletic announced today that Captain and Team MVP Danny Barrera will return to the Club for the 2021 season.
"Hartford truly feels like home to me and I am thrilled to be able to continue my career here," Barrera said. "Making the playoffs was our goal in 2020 and in 2021 our goal is to make a run at the USL Championship Final. We're ready to build off of the success of last season and come back even stronger next year."
This will be the third season in Green and Blue for Barrera, who became the Club's all-time leader in assists (11) in the 2020 season. Barrera's seven assists this season were good for fifth best in the USL Championship. He also added two goals to his tally, most notably the game winner against Philadelphia Union II which went viral and has since been dubbed "The Immaculate Deflection". The win pushed Hartford to a first-place finish in Group F and the first ever playoff game at Dillon Stadium.
"We are very excited to have Danny Barrera back in Hartford for the 2021 season," said Hartford Athletic Chairman Bruce Mandell. "Aside from making the most iconic play in our Club's short history, Danny is a proven leader and a strong veteran presence in our locker room. He will be an important piece for us on the pitch again this season."
Barrera is the first returning player announced for the 2021 season. Other returning players and new player signings will be announced in the coming weeks.
