HARRISBURG, Pa., Dec. 24, 2013 - Harrisburg Heat forward Tom Mellor has been named the Professional Arena Soccer League's player of the week, becoming the first Heat player to receive the honor in the franchise's season- plus in the league, the team announced today.
Mellor won the award after scoring a single-game, team-record five goals in Saturday's 9-8 defeat of the Detroit Waza at the Equine Arena of the State Farm Show Complex & Expo Center.
The five goals gave Mellor a team-high 11 for the season to go along with his team-leading eight assists. One of Mellor's assists came Saturday against Detroit for a sixth point, tying his own single-game franchise record for points that he set in another home victory over Detroit on Jan. 19, 2013.
The five-goal game also marked the second time this season that the 23 year old from Manchester, England, has scored at least three goals in a game and fifth time in 19 career games with the Heat that he has posted three or more goals. Mellor has 29 goals and 23 assists in those 19 games with the Heat.
Mellor also had a pair of goals last Thursday in the Heat's 9-3, non-league Open Cup victory over ReAL Harrisburg FC at Sports City. He missed Sunday's game at Cleveland, a 12-4 loss that dropped the Heat's overall record to 4-4 and their league record to 3-4.
Mellor is expected back in the Heat's lineup this weekend, when they play the New Jersey Dynamo in a non-league game Friday before facing Cleveland (6-3) on Saturday in an Open Cup semifinal match.
Kickoff for both games is 7:05 p.m. with both scheduled for the Equine Arena.
