Berkshire Black Bears News Release
Who ever was making the rules about teams looking sluggish after a long road trip forgot to tell Tony Harden. After the Black Bears played a 15-inning game last night in Quebec City and drove nearly eight hours back home to arrive in Pittsfield at 9:30 am this morning, the Berkshire Nine very easily could have used fatigue as an excuse when taking the field against Bangor tonight.
Instead, Harden (8-4) and the Black Bears came out and played like a team coming from a day off. Even the massive power outages occurring all over the northeastern United States could not deter the Black Bears starter, although electricity was never interrupted at Wahconah Park. Harden was the star of the night, throwing a complete game shutout, 2-hitter, against the Bangor Lumberjacks, allowing just 4 base runners all night long, walking two and striking out six en route to a 3-0 Black Bear victory.
The home team scored runs in three different innings in support of their hurler, including Manny Crespo's second solo-home run in as many games. The left fielder smashed one of the longest round-trippers of the 2003 season at Wahconah, as he plastered the very first pitch offered by Bangor starter Matt Scheuing in the 4th inning. The drive was Crespo's fourth of the year, as he finished the night 2 -for-4, with a single, a HR, and 1 RBI. Center fielder Shane Hopper also had a solid night, going 1-for-4 with a double and two runs scored.
Scheuing (0-1) finished with five and two-thirds innings, allowing 3 runs (2 earned) on five Berkshire hits, walking one and striking out 3. Reliever Brandon Bowe provided the only positive light for the Lumberjacks, tossing the final 2.1 innings in a scoreless, no-hit, effort, walking one and striking out three. The blanking of the Lumberjacks was the first shutout of the season for the Berkshire pitching staff.
Friday night's game sees Rick Guttormson (5-8) for the Black Bears verses Bangor's Jerry Long (2-5), 7:05 pm at Wahconah Park.
