HarbourCats Release Infielder

July 7, 2014 - West Coast League (WCL)
Victoria HabourCats News Release

The Victoria HarbourCats, riding a seven-game winning streak, are on the road to face the expansion Yakima Valley Pippins tonight through Wednesday -- and the team has made a roster move.

Infielder Cole Kreuter, who will attend UC-Irvine next fall as a freshman, and play for his grandfather Mike Gillespie, has been released and is expected to find another team in the West Coast League.

"Cole has been an outstanding member of our team, a true character, and represented the Victoria HarbourCats well in his time here -- it is with mixed emotions we grant him his release," said General Manager Jim Swanson.

"Cole wants to get more playing time in, and we believe another team will benefit from his skill-set. We are expecting he will help fill a hole with the Wenatchee AppleSox, where he and his family have connections and where there is a need in the middle infield that we don't have here. Cole would be welcome back any time in his college career to be part of the HarbourCats program, we think the world of him. It has been tough for him to get the at-bats he was seeking with how well Long Beach State veteran and fan favourite Alex DeGoti has played recently, and with the experience Alex brings to our team both defensively and in the heart of the order. We think Cole will be an impact player at the collegiate level, and in the WCL."

Kreuter was batting .250 (8-32) with four runs, one double, two runs batted in, and five walks in 13 games as a HarbourCat. He started the season as the shortstop but DeGoti returned to Victoria for the second series and has been hard to move out of the lineup.

UPCOMING EVENTS -- Inviting you all to help Victoria set a WORLD RECORD on Thursday, for the most ceremonial first pitches. The current record is 4,200. Sports Traders Diamond will open at 8:30am and run right through until gametime -- sponsored by Peninsula Co-op.

"This is something everyone can get involved with, any age, any ability, a real community effort to set a record Victoria can be proud of," said Swanson. "Peninsula Co-op will be a big part of the day, and all those who come by 3pm will be entered in a draw for a $200 gas card. We'll have HarbourCats ticket discounts for everyone who participates. Come down and pitch in!"

The HarbourCats play the Medford Rogues that night, 7:11pm, and we'll be doing first pitches right up to the start of the game.

FRIDAY, JULY 11 -- Mike's Hard Lemonade Giveaways (sunglasses!) and UPak Storage take centre stage on our first Friday night game of the home schedule. Gametime is 7:11pm at Sports Traders Diamond, against the Medford Rogues.

SATURDAY, JULY 12 -- OK, this is going to be fun. First, Victoria Buzz is sponsoring BIKE TO THE PARK DAY, a 1pm start at Sports Traders Diamond. Ride your bike to the park, where you can securely lock your ride, and get in for just $5!

As well, because it's so popular at games, we are going to switch up our in-game promotions and EVERY PROMO will be a dizzy bat race -- our FIRST EVER DIZZY BAT RACE TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS! The winners will compete later in the game in one huge DIZZY BAT RACE CHAMPIONSHIP -- anyone who has seen the dizzy bat race will tell you, this is something you WILL NOT WANT TO MISS!
