HarbourCats Continue Mastery of Kitsap

The Victoria HarbourCats have sure figured out how to beat the Kitsap BlueJackets, their West Division rivals.

The HarbourCats used a four-run seventh inning, one they were trying to squeeze a single run out of, to escape Saturday night with a 7-3 victory -- the sixth-straight win for the HarbourCats. Kitsap has lost 10 in a row, the last five against the HarbourCats.

This is a HarbourCats team proven capable of streaks on both sides of the ledger. The team posted a three-game win streak, then lost nine straight, and now has won a half-dozen consecutive to improve to 11-12. That record means second place by a thin margin over the Cowlitz Black Bears, but Victoria is seven games back of the dominating Bellingham Bells, who are 18-5 and on a 10-game winning streak.

On Saturday, HarbourCats starter Andrew Nelson had a difficult time finding the strike zone but somehow avoided giving up runs until the fourth inning. In the first, he threw 30 pitches and somehow did not allow a hit or run, walking three batters. He went four innings in total, walking four, striking out two, and giving up two runs and one hit.

Angel Delgado got the win in relief, throwing two innings with one run, two hits, two walks and two strikeouts. Quintin Torres-Costa, a lefty from Hawaii who pitched an inning the night before, threw three innings for the save, his second of the season. Torres-Costa struck out two, walked two, and gave up three hits, but no runs.

In front of a fireworks-night crowd of 1,005 in Silverdale, Wash., Alex DeGoti was 3-5 with two runs and an RBI, while Hunter Mercado-Hood, Wyler Smith and Jake Lesinski posted multi-hit games. The HarbourCats struck out just six times and banged out 13 hits -- the reverse of how numbers looked as the team was struggling earlier in the season.

The HarbourCats play Kitsap one more time on Sunday, a 3:05pm start, then head off to Yakima Valley to face the expansion Pippins in games that run Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

The HarbourCats are next home to the Medford Rogues on Thursday, which is WORLD RECORD CEREMONIAL PITCH DAY, with people starting to throw ceremonial pitches at 8:30am at Sports Traders Diamond. The goal is 5,000, to beat records set earlier in the United States.

Friday's game is the debut of PISE FITNESS FRIDAYS, a 'baseball bootcamp' that allows fans to get a good workout in while taking in a ballgame -- contact the office to buy a General Admission ticket and sign up.

Saturday's game is an afternoon affair, 1:05pm, and it's Bike To The Park Day.
