HarbourCats Announce Youth Instructional Camps, Kids Club

VICTORIA, B.C. - Through so many means, the Victoria HarbourCats have had an impact on youth baseball on Vancouver Island - through the 50-50 program, through helping set up the Toronto Blue Jays Super Camps, and through donations for club fund-raisers.
The HarbourCats have a stated goal to work with and support youth baseball, and have taken that commitment to another level this season with the unveiling of the 2014 HARBOURCATS SKILLS CAMP PACKAGE.
The six-session plan will provide instruction from college and international-level instructors not just in the summer months, but into the fall. Victoria's wonderful climate lends perfectly to the HarbourCats extending the skills camp offering beyond the summer months.
"We want these camps to provide instruction that is based in fundamentals, and that translates across all ages, skills and abilities, and we also want to recognize that so many fundamental skills are in place for both baseball and softball," said General Manager Jim Swanson. "The mechanics of hitting, throwing and fielding are so similar for both sports, and we think there is a desire to be part of this kind of programming, which is intended to augment and support the great programs already going on in Victoria and the South Island."
HarbourCats Head Coach Bob Miller and assistants Ben Jackson, Chris Lindmark and Charlie Strandlund will be aided by HarbourCats players for the summer sessions, with the coaches - all collegiate-level players or coaches - devising the instructional plan. Strandlund and Swanson will guide the instruction for the fall sessions, maintaining consistency in approach and goals for the attendees.
"This is an exciting program to be a part of because the HarbourCats brand of baseball is so well-regarded in Victoria after just one full season, and we can use that to help youths become better baseball players," said Strandlund, a former professional baseball player. "I think it's important to move the camps around to various locations as well, so taking these sessions to Peninsula's Rotary Park or Esquimalt's Lions Park, and other places in the future, will make it even more accessible."
The camps are supported by the Greater Victoria Baseball Association.
"We're glad to partner with the HarbourCats and their plan to move these camps around our GVBA ballparks, and it's a great idea to extend the camps into the fall," said Fraser Campbell, President of the Greater Victoria Baseball Association. "The HarbourCats have a focus on building baseball in the region, and we really appreciate the approach they have taken."

There are many options for players aged 6-14 - the camps are two hours in length, so the players learn, participate, and retain the instruction from HarbourCats players and coaches
