Edenton Steamers News Release
EDENTON, N.C - Josh Hampton connected for two, two-run home runs to lead the Edenton Steamers 12-hit offensive attack as they defeated the Wilson Tobs 12-4 on Wednesday night at Historic Hicks Field.
Adam Bray (South Dakota State University) brought his 2-2 record into his fifth start of the season. On the other side of the diamond, Josh Johnson made his first start and 16th appearance for the Tobs.
Bray gave up two singles in the top of the first to begin the ball game before settling down and retiring 11 straight Tobs including three straight one, two, three frames.
Edenton's offense, in the bottom of the first, got going quickly against Johnson. With one out and Laz Villa (Reedley College) on second base, Trent Miller (Middle Tennessee State University) smacked an RBI double for a 1-0 Steamers lead. Josh Hampton (Wilmington University) followed with a laser beam to centerfield for a two-run home run and a 3-0 Edenton advantage.
The Steam machine followed with two more runs in the bottom of the second against Johnson when Villa singled home Alex Delgado (Emmanuel College) who was hit by a pitch. Trent Miller then knocked in Nick Thompson (East Carolina University), who walked, for a 5-0 Steamer lead.
The score remained 5-0 Edenton into the top of the fifth when the rain began to fall. The field was cleared with two outs and the Tobs shortstop Seth Neeley up to bat with an 0-2 count. A 21 minute rain delay ensued before play resumed.
Bray came back out, retired Neeley and in the top of the sixth inning walked Collins Cuthrell to begin the inning. Kevin Jordan followed with his fourth home run of the season, a two-run home run to cut the lead to 5-2 Steamers.
Johnson came out for the sixth inning and Edenton's offense made him pay. With Nick Miller (University of Northern Colorado) on third and Delgado on first, Dominic Fratantuono (Towson University) laced a two-run triple off the left-centerfield wall for a 7-2 Steamers lead. Villa followed with an RBI single, scoring Fratantuono and Trent Miller slapped his second RBI double of the game. Hampton followed Miller by hitting a ball that might still be entering the earth's atmosphere, high over the left-field wall for his second two-run home run of the game and his eighth of the season for an 11-2 Steamers lead.
Wilson added two runs in the top of the ninth, on an RBI walk and a sacrifice fly after Edenton plated a gimme run in the bottom of the eighth for the 12-4 final.
Bray picked up the win for his six innings of work, allowing four hits, and two runs. He walked two and struck out five; improving to 3-2 on the season.
Johnson's final line for Wilson was rough, six innings, 11 runs, 11 hits, no walks and two strikeouts. He is now 4-3 on the season.
Edenton has now won three in a row and 14 in a row at home. They improve to 30-9 overall and 10-3 in the second half. Edenton is the first team to reach the 30 win mark and holds a .005 percentage lead (.769 to .764) over Peninsula for the second-half East Division title entering play tomorrow. Wilson falls to 22-20 overall and 7-9 in the second half and is now on the outside looking in for a spot in the Petitt Cup Playoffs in August.
Edenton travels to Wilson tomorrow for a double header with first pitch from Historic Fleming Stadium set for 6 pm and game two to follow 30 minutes following the conclusion of game one.
