Jupiter Hammerheads News Release

JUPITER, Fla. - The Hammerheads were blanked for the second time in their last three games Sunday, losing their series finale to the Mets 1-0.

Making his Hammerheads debut, RHP Jacob Esch limited the Mets to just one unearned run on one hit and one walk. Seven of the 12 outs recorded by Esch were groundballs, four of them strikeouts. His counterpart, RHP Noah Syndergaard scattered three hits in four scoreless innings, striking out five.

Jupiter's offensive woes doomed them once again on Sunday. The Hammerheads stranded 10 base runners, hitting 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position. After four games, Andy Haines' squad is batting 3-for-29 with runners in scoring position and has left 35 men on base. But despite being outscored 15 to 3 by St. Lucie in their four-game sweep, the Hammerheads out-hit the Mets 32 to 27.

While an 0-4 start isn't what the defending South Division champions were hoping for, there's plenty for Hammerheads fans to be excited about. Jupiter's starting pitchers saw their scoreless innings streak end today at 12, but they still haven't allowed an earned run in 15 consecutive innings, dating back to LHP Justin Nicolino's scoreless fifth frame on Opening Day.

Left fielder Ryan Rieger extended his hitting streak to four games today, going 2-for-4. His .438 batting average (7-for-16) leads the team. Ryan Fisher and Ryan Goetz also collected multiple hits.

Goetz entered the game to replace Terrence Dayleg in the top of the fifth, who was carted off the field after a base runner collided into him at second base.

Catcher Wilfredo Gimenez highlighted a day full of nifty plays by Jupiter's infield defense, throwing out St. Lucie's Matt Reynolds at second base in the sixth inning - from his knees.

The Hammerheads get a chance to regroup with an off-day Monday. They will then travel to Fort Myers to begin a three-game set with the Miracle on Tuesday. RHP Jose Urena will make his first start of the season in the series opener for Jupiter, opposing Fort Myers starter RHP D.J. Baxendale.
