JUPITER, Fla. - Despite a sparkling pitching performance from RHP Anthony DeSclafani in his Hammerheads debut, the defending South Division champions dropped their home opener to the Mets 6-1 Saturday night in front 2,399 fans at Roger Dean Stadium.

Acquired from the Toronto Blue Jays in an offseason trade, DeSclafani held the Mets to just one hit and no walks in five innings, striking out three. Eight of the 15 outs DeSclafani induced were groundballs, matching the total of Mets' starter RHP Jacob DeGrom, who scattered five hits over six scoreless innings.

The Hammerheads set a season-high with 10 hits, but left 13 runners on base and went 1-for-10 as a team with runners in scoring position. Through three games, Jupiter is 2-for-21 with runners in scoring position.

Down 6-0 in the bottom of the seventh, three straight batters reached with two outs before Ryan Fisher drove in the Hammerheads' only run on a hit-by-pitch. Matt Smith then grounded out to end the threat. Jupiter left the bases loaded again in the eighth - this time with just one out - before Isaac Galloway lined into a double play.

Sean Donatello took the loss in his season debut. After striking out the first two batters he faced, Donatello retired just two of the next eight. He was charged with five runs (four earned) on five hits and a walk in 1.1 innings.

Left fielder Ryan Rieger starred on offense for the Hammerheads, going 3-for-4 with a walk and a stolen base from the two-hole. His seven hits rank second on the team and his .462 batting average ties Isaac Galloway's for the best among Hammerheads hitters.

The Hammerheads won't have to wait long to avenge their 0-3 start, as they'll take on the Mets Sunday afternoon in Jupiter at 1:05 p.m. RHP Jacob Esch - the Marlins' 11th round pick in the 2011 draft - will make his Hammerheads debut opposite RHP Noah Syndergaard, whom the Mets acquired from the Blue Jays in the R.A. Dickey trade in December.
