Jupiter Hammerheads News Release
JUPITER, FL - The Hammerheads had the winning run on base in the ninth inning but could not complete a comeback as they lost to St. Lucie 5-4 on Monday.
Trailing by a run going into the bottom of the ninth, Terrence Dayleg reached on an infield single and Matt Juengel would follow with a single between short and third. After Colin Moran lined out to center, the Mets would go to the bullpen and Paul Sewald would retire Blake Barber on a fly out and Sharif Othman on a groundout to end the ballgame.
Jupiter had a chance to tie the game an inning prior but could not convert. With one out in the frame Ryan Goetz hit an infield single and advanced to second when the throw by the third baseman was wild. Jesus Solorzano would then hit a flyball to the warning track in left in which Goetz stayed at the bag to tag up. When the left fielder couldn't catch the ball Goetz motored around third but was held there. Solorzano ended up 2/3 of the way to third as two Hammerheads were within feet of the same bag. Goetz eventually broke home and was tagged out as Solorzano moved to third.
With two outs and the tying run on third St. Lucie brought in Robert Coles who struck out Viosergy Rosa to end the threat.
Matt Milroy took the loss in his first start with the Hammerheads despite allowing just two hits. He allowed one run through five when Jupiter gave him the lead.
Noah Perio led off the bottom of the fifth with an infield single and was bunted to second. Christian Yelich, who began his rehab stint with Jupiter on Monday, then hit a single up the middle to tie the game at one.
After a flyout, Terrence Dayleg hit a single to right field to put runners on the corners. Juengel would then drive both runners in when he sliced a triple into the corner in right to give Jupiter a 3-1 lead.
In the top of the sixth Milroy loaded the bases thanks to a pair of walks and a single and was pulled from the game. Miguel Fermin would enter the game and Cam Maron would immediately hit a two-run double to center to tie things up at three.
Aderlin Rodriguez would follow with a single up the middle to drive home a pair and give the Mets a lead they would not relinquish.
Jupiter and St. Lucie will play the series finale on Tuesday. First pitch is at 6:35 p.m.
NOTES: Yelich would finish the game 1-for-2 with a RBI single and a walk. He would play five innings in left field
WP: Kevin McGowan (1-0)
