Jupiter Hammerheads News Release
JUPITER, FL - On a night in which the Hammerheads slugged 16 hits it was a wild pitch that was the difference in the ballgame. Corey Baker's wild offering in the 13th inning allowed Cody Keefer to score as Jupiter beat Palm Beach 5-3 on Tuesday.
With the game tied at three in the 13th inning the Hammerheads rallied with one out when Ross Wilson and Keefer reached on back-to-back singles. Austin Barnes followed with a single to right but Wilson was thrown out at the plate. On the throw home the runners advanced to second and third.
With Cameron Flynn at the plate Baker threw a pitch out of the reach of catcher Jesus Montero as the Sharks went ahead.
Flynn would provide some insurance when he singled up the middle to plate Barnes.
Joseph O'Gara would close things out in the bottom of the 13th for his third save of the year.
Palm Beach jumped out to an early lead in the first inning when Charlie Tilson led off with a double, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a groudout.
The Hammerheads would tie the game when Blake Barber hit a sac fly in the second but the Birds would reclaim the lead an inning later when Jacob Wilson drove in a run with a sac fly of his own.
In the fifth the Sharks took the lead when Ross Wilson led off the frame with a solo shot to left, his first homer of the year, and Viosergy Rosa plated Keefer with a single.
The score would remain 3-2 until the bottom of the eighth when Nick Martini scored on a double play tying the game at three.
Jheyson Manzueta picked up his first win of the year after he tossed a scoreless 12th inning before O'Gara came in for the save.
The Hammerheads had 16 hits in the game including three apiece from Flynn, Rosa, Matt Juengel, and Ross Wilson. Juengel extended his hitting streak to nine games thanks to the performance.
It was the longest game of the season for Jupiter, both in innings (13) and time (3 hours 27 minutes)
The Hammerheads will look for a sweep of the three-game set with Palm Beach on Wednesday. Jupiter will be the designated home team in that contest.
WP: Jheyson Manzueta (1-0)
LP: Corey Baker (2-1)
S: Joseph O'Gara (3)
