Palm Beach Cardinals News Release

Jupiter, FL - The Palm Beach Cardinals used a late rally to force extra innings but couldn't finish the deal, falling to the Jupiter Hammerheads 5-3 in a 13-inning affair on Tuesday night at Roger Dean Stadium. The loss drops the Cardinals to 0-3 in extra-inning games this season.

With the score even at 3-3 in the top of the 13th inning, the Hammerheads pieced together three straight hits. Ross Wilson, Cody Keefer, and Austin Barnes each singled in order off Palm Beach reliever Corey Baker with one out in the frame. On Barnes' drive to right, Wilson was thrown out at home by Nick Martini in dramatic fashion to keep the game tied. Cardinals catcher Jesus Montero missed the tag at the plate initially, but Wilson slid by home to give a diving Montero time to make the play.

The tremendous defense was all-for-naught however, as Keefer scored the go-ahead run on a Baker wild pitch in the next at-bat. Cameron Flynn singled home Barnes to put the Sharks on top 5-3.

Trailing 3-2 in the eighth inning, Martini was able to start a rally for the Cardinals. The right fielder led off the inning with a ground rule double to center, moved to third on a Breyvic Valera single, and tied the game at 3-3 on a double play ball.

Charlie Tilson paced the Cardinals offense early on with two hits and two runs over the first three innings. The center fielder opened the game with a ground rule double to right and scored the game's first run on a Martini groundout.

With the game tied 1-1 in the third, Tilson led off the inning with a beautiful bunt single, swiped second base, and scampered to third on a wild pitch. Jacob Wilson drove him home on a sacrifice fly to give the Cardinals a 2-1 advantage after three.

Palm Beach starter Michael Mayers picked up his third quality start of the season with three runs on eight hits over six innings of work. The right-hander walked two, struck out two, and allowed a solo home run to Wilson in the fifth.

Robert Stock kept Jupiter off the board with two innings of solid relief before Baker came on in the ninth.

Baker (2-1) was terrific in five innings of extended relief, keeping the Cardinals in the game with four scoreless frames before surrendering the go-ahead run in the 13th.

Jheyson Manzueta (1-0) picked up the win for Jupiter after a scoreless 12th and Joseph O'Gara notched his third save of the year after retiring the side in the 13th.

Jupiter holds a 2-0 edge in the series.

The Cardinals and Hammerheads will finish the three-game set on Wednesday night at 6:35 p.m. RH Joe Cuda (0-3, 13.85) will start for Palm Beach against RH Trevor Williams (2-3, 4.43) for Jupiter. The game will be broadcast live on PalmBeachCardinals.com.
