Hammerheads Fall in Series Opener

JUPITER, FL - The Charlotte Stone Crabs scored three times in the eighth inning to earn a comeback win against the Hammerheads on Saturday night at Roger Dean Stadium.

Charlotte continues to be a pain for the Sharks this season as Stone Crabs have now taken six of seven games against Jupiter this year. Saturday's loss was a tough one for the Hammerheads as they fell after picking a lead in the seventh inning.

The game was a pitcher's duel for the first six and half inning innings as Jake Esch and Blake Snell traded zeros. For Esch it was one of his best starts of the year as the righty tossed seven shutout innings. It was his fifth quality start this year and the second time in 2014 he did not allow a run in an outing.

When Esch threw his final pitch in the seventh inning he needed the Hammerheads to score in order to pick up a win and they did just that against Kevin Brandt.

Josh Adams reached on an error by the third baseman to start the frame and was bunted to second by Anthony Gomez. Two batters later, with Adams on third after a wild pitch, a grounder off the bat of Colin Moran got under the glove of the first baseman as the Hammerheads took a 1-0 lead on the miscue.

In the top of the eighth Colby Suggs entered the game and with one out he allowed an infield single to Tommy Coyle. Granden Goetzman would then slice a ball down the right field line that just stayed fair. It went for a triple as Coyle scored to tie the game.

After Suggs walked the next batter, he was replaced by Reid Redman who threw a wild pitch allowing Goetzman to score the go-ahead run. Maxx Tissenbaum would later hit a RBI single to give Charlotte a two-run advantage.

The Sharks would get two runners on in the eighth and the ninth but could not cash in either time as they lost for the 13th time in the last 14 games.

The Hammerheads and Stone Crabs will play the middle game of the series on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 p.m.
