Jupiter Hammerheads News Release
JUPITER, Fla. - The Jupiter Hammerheads used a three-run fourth inning to surge past the Palm Beach Cardinals 4-2 at Roger Dean Stadium on Friday night. Through six games in the Fins vs. Feathers rivalry at The Dean, the two teams each hold three wins. The current four-game series is also now even with one win each.
The Palm Beach Cardinals (12-10) were able to light up the scoreboard first in the Friday night contest as they jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after just one inning. The run, however, was aided by a Hammerhead error and went unearned on the stat line for Jupiter starting pitcher, Ryan Newell. C.J McElroy Jr. was able to reach on an infield single hit to the third baseman, an error on the catch though by Felix Munoz allowed McElroy to move into scoring position at second. Robelys Reyes opened the scoring for Palm Beach by collecting the RBI with a single to right-center field.
The Hammerheads (9-13) were not able to answer the bird call until the third inning when they put up their own one-spot to even the game. Jupiter manufactured its run with a lead-off walk from Chris Hoo followed by a sacrifice bunt from Yefri Perez to move Hoo into scoring position for J.T. Riddle at the top of the order. Riddle then collected the RBI and pushed Hoo home with a single through the hole on the right side of the infield to even the game at one.
Jupiter was able to break through and take their first lead of this series with a big three-run fourth inning. Brian Anderson, Felix Munoz and Avery Romero began the frame with three consecutive singles to plate the first run. Anderson scored while Romero picked up the first RBI of the inning. Blake Barber then added a one-out single to load the bases. Hoo was then able to follow Barber with a bloop single into right-center field that allowed Munoz and Romero to score giving Jupiter a 4-1 advantage.
Palm Beach answered in the bottom half of the fourth, but with only one run to cap the scoring at 4-2 as pitching and solid defense would dominate the later parts of the game. The Redbirds' final run came after a walk from Rowan Wick and a RBI-double off of the left field wall from Carson Kelly to plate Wick.
Ryan Newell (3-1) had a quality start for Jupiter and became the second Hammerhead pitcher to three wins. Newell hurled six strong innings allowing just two runs, one earned, on six hits with one walk and eight strikeouts. Miguel Del Pozo relieved Newell in the seventh and pitched two scoreless frames with just one hit and walk allowed while fanning two Cardinals. Juancito Martinez picked up his second save of the season with a perfect ninth inning that included two strikeouts.
Munoz, Romero and Hoo led the Hammerheads offensively with multi-hit games. Hoo went a perfect 2-2 at the plate with two RBI's, a run scored and two walks. For Palm Beach, McElroy, Reyes and Kelly were the only Cardinals with hits. McElroy chipped in three, while Reyes and Kelly both had two.
Corey Littrell (0-4) took the loss for the Cardinals. Littrell gave up seven hits and four earned runs with one walk and one strikeout in his 5 2/3 innings performance. Kevin Herget and Chris Perry both entered in relief to pitch a combined 3 1/3 scoreless innings. Perry pitched a perfect ninth inning with two strikeouts.
The Hammerheads and Cardinals will continue their Fins vs. Feathers series on Saturday night at The Dean. First pitch is set for 5:35 p.m. for "Boot, Scoot and Baseball" Night at Roger Dean. To purchase tickets for the Great Eight Event, please call (561) 630-1828 or visit RogerDeanStadium.com.
